Pay all of your bills and earn miles

While investigating the latest Chase offer for a Contintental Airlines debit card (10,000 miles for $30), I was told by two customer reps and a manager that not only do you get 1 mile per $2 spent on the card, you also get 1 mile per $2 paid out of your account via the free on line bill paying service. This opens the incredible possibility of a double dip for paying your credit card bills. Use a credit card to get miles, then pay its bill and get more miles. You can pay any bill with this system. (Please, please refrain from making commments or asking questions on how this system might be abused.)

I can find no mention of this on line. Does anyone have this card and pay bills on line? Is it true? Can we really now get miles for paying our mortgages?

Also, when you open certain Chase checking accounts on line or by phone, you can partially fund them by credit card (mileage producing, of course), $100 to $1000 per account. The transaction will be charged as a purchase, not a cash advance, but check with your credit card company to be sure they agree with this. American Express, especially, often does not agree to charge this type of transaction as a purchase. Again, I can't find this info on line, but two customer reps and a manager confirmed it.

Do you get miles for online bill payment or only automatic bill payment from specific merchants?

CMW Feb 20, 2004 9:01 am

I signed up for this account and this debit card recently because of a very lucrative sign-up offer.

see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum20/HTML/009670.html

I do not plan to use it as a primary checking account but I will pay a bill on-line and see if I receive any points for it. I'll post my results.

pgary

Do you have a link to this offer? 800 no.?

Thanks in advance.

miles_kay Feb 20, 2004 9:26 am

Never mind..Got it. Thanks!

lanemckenna Feb 20, 2004 11:16 am

PGary - Thanks for the info. I hope you do not mind. I made reference to your web site and this offer under the Continental forum.

I called Chase and they confirmed that the qualifying miles were based on the activity of the account and not strictly from the use of the debit card (i.e. PIN based transactions). Most banks that have similar debit/mileage programs have this caveat. This works well for me....I have a both a Chase mortgage and auto loan

birdyy Feb 20, 2004 1:49 pm

Can you give us a link for the 10,000 miles offer. Both the Chase and Continental sites only have a 2000 mile offer. Thanks.

Sorry, I found it.

I couldn't really get much out of the rep I got on the phone, but here is a link that explains the online billpay:

http://www.chase.com/cm/cs?pagename=Chase/Href&urlname=ch ase/pf/banking/chasebankingcard/bankingcard/automaticbillpay

what I really wanted to know is: can existing cardholders get the 2 miles/$1 spent or do I have to open a new account, and does this also work with a debit card? No answers on that but I guess I will just have to try it and see. What I am really wondering is, I already use Chase's online banking. This is tied to my checking account, which has the Continental card linked to it. I just made a payment. How do I know this will get miles (as though paid from card rather than checking account?) I called them back was told to call the Chase/Continental One Pass Customer service number, (877) 292-4273. This does seem like the right place to go. I stuck with the last question above and was told that there are only three ways to get miles paying bills, and we all know these already:

1) Pay the bill with the mastercard as usual when it comes due. But this does not help with mortgages.

2) call the vendor and pay over the phone. This also does not help with mortgages.

3) Set up auto payment with each vendor online.

These are methods we all know already and don't address the idea of how to use Chase's online banking to deduct money from the card rather than the checking account. She did tell me to call online banking back (they are the ones that directed me to the Onepass center originally) and ask how to set this account up so that it uses the 16 digit continental card number rather than checking. This sounded promising so I will call them now and report of any news.

So now I'm confused. This latest link is for "auto payment" from a debit card. As I understood the original poster he was referring to using "bill pay". That's really two different things. Which are we discussing here?

CozumelJen Feb 20, 2004 2:22 pm

I just talked with someone in online banking who said that you absolutely cannot use your debit card to earn miles online this way. Disappointing. If anyone finds differently, please post. I talked to four different Chase representatives on this matter today.

birdyy,

I am thinking that the only way to get miles is to use vendors that already accept mastercard anyway. Here is a quote from the link:

I, too, have been getting contradictory information about this deal. I have spoken with 4 reps and one manager. The rep who seemed the most knowlegable turned out to be a temp on her first day of the job, and got everything wrong. The manager I spoke with is trying to undo the deal she set me up for based on incorrect info. The better reps say they have no script for this and tell me they just don't know.

I posted the original info because it came from the same manager I am working with to undo the deal I don't want. I thought perhaps she knew what she was talking about, but it did seem too good to be true. I am waiting for her to call me back on the undoing of the deal thing, and will ask her if the miles for bill paying is only for automatic bill paying, or does it also apply to bill paying that I initiate on line at the Chase web site. I will post what whe says both on my site and here.

When I look at the list of merchants who will this for you, I suspect that these are the same ones who will bill your credit card automatically. If this is the case, you would be better off having them bill your mileage producing credit card. I am hoping that the manager with whom I spoke did not get this deal confused with payment of bills the account holder initiates. I am waiting for a call back from this manager now. Will update when I hear from her.

I called Chase and specifically asked if the miles were credited based on debit card activity or account activity (i.e. online bill payment) and they said "on account activity". Does anyone currently use Chase's online bill pay from a checking account linked with the Continental OnePass program?
