That is just amazing. I talked to a fifth rep (while trying to get through to the manager who started all of this), and was told that bill paying initiated by me on line would not earn miles.

What a screwed up operation they have. It looks to me like we will just have to pay a few bills on line and see if we get miles for it. I think the 10,000 miles alone are worthwhile, and we can always close our accounts after 45 days or so if no more miles are forthcoming.

My manager person did not return my calls, of course. She is supposed to be off tomorrow.

Believe me, Chase online banking customer support is the worst out there. Unless you have a branch around the corner to walk into, they will never solve a slightly complicated issue. That being said, if we can get miles for paying any bill, I dont care if they suck.

"Paying bills can be rewarding, just use your Card to sign up for automatic bill payment and watch how the miles and points add up."
Hmm, not very promising.

I really think that they are talking about automatic bill payment not online bill payment. Many of us already do automatic bill payment with our debit or credit cards and I do believe that is what Chase is referring to. If we were able to earn miles for online bill payment, can you imagine the possibilities. I can't imagine any back doing this. Just from the people on these boards it would cost them millions and millions of miles. I think the original poster had a very inexperience person on the phone. You know what they say, if it's to good to be true it probably is.

Yes, my first into to this idea was from a very inexperienced customer rep. I would not have posted it here based on that info alone, because it did seem too good to be true. But the idea was confirmed by a manager! I was very clear with her that I was asking about the on line bill paying feature wherin I initiate individual payments of bills by going on line.

Sigh. We will see. In the mean time, we can enjoy our cheap 10,000 miles.

someone earlier above asked whether anyone had a chase account already and was using it to do online banking. I have had my account for over three years and don't get miles for it. The only way is if the 16 digit code from the Chase/Continental card goes to the merchant.

CraigS Feb 21, 2004 8:22 pm

I have the CO Chase debit card. You get 1 mile for every 2 dollars you spend unless you have the Plat signature card that will pay 1 mile for every dollar (you must have 50K in a linked account for the Plat signature card).

You do get you miles for every transaction on your card but none for taking cash out of the ATM. You do NOT get miles for paying your bills thru their bill pay system.

The ad they have is misleading- it points out that some companies- like cell phone companies- will let you pay your bill VIA a credit card. They are pointing out that you can use your debit card for these monthly charges and earn points. So unless your mortage company lets you charge you monthly payment to a credit card, you won't get points for paying your mortage....

I called customer service after reading the information posted in the link listed below.

http://www.chase.com/cm/cs?pagename=...rd/continental

Fourth paragraph down:

Make purchases and bill payments more rewarding and earn one (1) OnePass mile for every two ($2) dollars you spend - for a low $30 annual fee. The miles you earn do not expire.*

It clearly states - Bill Payments. The first rep checked with the supervisor and said that you are eligible to receive 1 mile for every $2 spent on bill payment. The second rep checked with an associate and said that you are not allowed to receive the miles for bill payment.

I am confused just like everyone else, but I think they have to provide miles for bill payment since the website clearly has bill payment listed.

Just wanted to get your thoughts incase I am reading it incorrectly.

norton Feb 24, 2004 3:51 pm

I think I got my question answered. I talked to a 3rd rep who said that you are eligible to receive miles if the Vendor accepts the transaction as a credit card payment. Example: Some places accept rent payments by credit card.

You are not eligible for miles if you pay your bills thru online banking since they don't count as credit card transactions.

I think that's exactly correct. From the site that you referred to: "Make purchases and bill payments more rewarding and earn one (1) OnePass mile for every two ($2) dollars you spend - for a low $30 annual fee. The miles you earn do not expire.*"
It's make purchases and bill payments (meaning with the card) not "use" bill payment. As much as we wanted it, I just don't think this is going to happen. It's a wonderful idea and
I would be the first in line.

Well, they can be transferred to United or Midwest, via Amtrak.

Promotion Update

To all FTers and PGary - Although this offer did not seem great at the time (too much confusion and worthless companion certificate), I feel like in the end it was worth it. If a similar promotion comes along, do not dismiss it so quickly (throw myself into this category too)!

After all of the confusion (can you get miles for paying bills online? how many miles?, what type of checking account do I need to open?), here is what I wound up with........ 20,000 OnePass miles and a companion certificate for $60! I opened a joint checking account with my wife and both of us received 10,000 OnePass bonus miles credited to our accounts and one companion certificate. Not a bad deal from my perspective!

pgary May 9, 2004 7:20 pm

Well, I got 10,000 miles for $30, too. But they are Continental miles, so I am not certain they are worth anything. Will find out soon, trying for a ticket to Lima, Peru.

It would have been better use of my time to work an hour or two to earn the money the 10,000 miles less $30 is worth. I spent an incredible amount of time on this. Never have I received more wrong or contradictory answers and incorrectly executed instructions from customer reps for any institution, even airlines.

The most valuable thing learned here is to never do business with Chase. Fortunately, I understand they are in the process of being bought out by BankOne.
