You'd be restricted to 25% only on cheapie tickets, anyway - and it's a worldwide thing not just for the US. That level's actually a benefit to UK residents who used to get 0% on these cheapie fares.

Welcome to FT
Also, remember to look into other ways of earning miles besides just flying.
AA has a credit card with Citibank which offers 1 mile for 1GBP of spend and all miles count towards lifetime status after you hit 1MM miles
I'm sure the other airlines also have mileage credit cards too.

I thought when I moved to London that I would be doing weekend trips on Ryanair and Easyjet. However, I just don't have the time/energy to bother with going to Stansted or Luton, and the Easyjet LGW flights are never cheap when I want to fly (Fri night/Sun afternoon).
I end up taking most of my personal travel on BA and crediting the meager miles to my AA account.

I have dedided to stay with UA MP since moving to BHD. I'm a UA 1K, so the ability to earn SWUs are the main reason for me.
The only thing that rubs me the wrong way is the paltry miles UA FFers earn on the BD flights I frequently take to connect from LHR, and the fact that UA does not credit status bonuses on BD flights or codeshares. I'm considering opening a LH account solely for banking my BD flights - at 250 per flight they're prety much worthless on UA, but at 1,000 per flight on LH they'll add up reasonably quickly.

Award Travel Comparison
(for flights originating in Europe)
(Lufthansa Award redemption rates valid from August 1st, 2004)
To Europe: (CDG, MIL, PRG, AMS, VNO):
United: 20,000*
bmi: (12,000 to CDG, AMS) (20,000 to MIL, PRG, VNO)
Lufthansa: 30,000
Lufthansa Fly Smart Award: 15,000
KLM: 25,000
To Hong Kong:
United: 70,000**
bmi: 70,000
Lufthansa: 80,000
Lufthansa Fly Smart Award: 70,000
KLM: 100,000
To India:
United: 60,000
bmi: 50,000
Lufthansa: 60,000
Lufthansa Fly Smart Award: 50,000
KLM: 80,000
To Middle East:
United: 40,000
bmi: 40,000
Lufthansa: 40,000
Lufthansa Fly Smart Award: 35,000
KLM: 50,000
To North America:
United: 50,000
bmi: 45,000
Lufthansa: 60,000
Lufthansa Fly Smart Award: 50,000
KLM: 50,000
* Award chart states, lower award exists for all-bmi itinerary (although I don't know how much lower).
**(90,000 via North America)
If I am traveling with a companion and if I am correct that companion awards on LH are 50% off, intra-Europe awards would be 22,500/person, 60,000/person to Hong Kong, 45,000/person to India and the US, and 30,000 to the Middle East, based on two people traveling together.
If 50% off companion awards apply to Fly Smart redemption levels, this would be very nice. I have yet to confirm this.
Apparently a lot of changes will be made to Lufthansa's M&M programme effective August 1st, 2004 as evidenced in the thread mentioned below, as well as the miles-and-more website.

Since you already have Cathay Pacific miles, and with AA and BA as close as they appear to be (I know more about that subject), I would recommend that you go the oneworld approach from London, and either base it on AA or BA. BA rules the roost at both Heathrow and Gatwick, so once you get to their Elite levels, it can work for you.
