UA to require co-pay for miles-based upgrades

Just got the email...needless to say, this is awful. It will definitely severely affect the frequency of my travel (I have considerable freedom in deciding when/where to fly for business-related activities). Nice job United...

What are you going to do? Switch to AA and deal with the same thing?

At least they're kindly giving 500 mile minimum retroactively to the people who truly care about earning miles.

I think they are all going to get worse, not better. Just the writing on the wall. Too many ways to earn miles, huge bonuses (e.g. 25K to sign up for a credit card, etc).

These CC sign-up bonuses aren't exclusive to UA though...DL gives a 25K sign-up bonus, CO gives 21K, etc. (I'm sure there's other values to these airlines floating out there too, but that's just what any john or jane can do by logging onto their websites)
