Nice find Beckles. I thought your post was going to be about keeping ones fingers crossed for a transatlantic upgrade off a coach fare, but this was better.

Call me crazy - (waits for the thread) - but if I can get bulkhead on an Airbii/767/777, I am quite happy with UA's Economy product. Plenty of legroom, the 18" seats are comfortably wide enough for my bum, and the FAs still care on my flights.
I fly a good deal less in upgraded First now thanks to the extra 5K miles need each way (only on transcons, and then only on three-class or 757s), but I'm doing just fine for the most part.

I'm an AA Platinum member and virtually always get upgraded within the 72 hour window. But when the flight is more than two or three hours, I don't take any chances. I always get a confirmed upgrade or free first class ticket using miles.
