Way too Critical

Please take it from me, a relatively new FlyerTalk reader, that the constant correction and picking away at postings is out of hand. This is a public page, and if someone chooses to post a topic where "you" think it is misplaced, perhaps you could recover, not mention it, and get on with your lives.(Please, I do not intend to be meanspirited, at all. I just think that "management" skills are being applied where they are not individuals' jobs -similar to applying these with spouse or children.)

Doug:

You mention/convey that the constant correcting and redirecting of posts is "out of hand." I, too, have noticed redirecting and the healthy criticism of certain posts, yet I have hardly ever considered it unreasonable or out of hand. Would you mind pointing out where this sort of excessive (perhaps unfair) action is taking place. I just haven't seen it. But I'm certainly open to your claim.

In contrast to my internet newsgroup experience, I have considered this board generally civil and courteous. The redirecting of posts is essential to keeping the board well managed. Otherwise, posts/threads get started where they shouldn't and this has a variety of ramifications. My experience.

OK folks...I'm going to volunteer to take one more crack at this.

Calm down. No one here is so full of themselves that that they really care that much about this stuff. We're just a bunch of folks with a common interest in miles and points.

Note that any "reminders" to post something elsewhere are sent with good feelings. We want to find the topics we are interested in, and posting them in some order helps everyone save time.

The folks I have written to and met since posting here are wonderful, intelligent, good natured individuals. Take any "corrections" as the equivalent of very close friends sticking their tounge out at each other, then laughing.

Please feel free to participate and find out that I am being truthful. Also, if anyone upsets you, please e-mail them and tell them, as I'm sure you will find most of us sensitive to any civil correspondence.

ahem - isn't this criticism of criticism a criticism in and of itself?

the "way too critical" may be just little bit "a way too critical" - and isn't it a little bit "onesided" too?

I've always lived by the rule that if one has nothing good to say, one should remain silent. And that there is nothing worse than a hypocrite.

Having said that, I just want to point out that Piccard and Jones cheated. They cheated and lied and are clearly frauds. I hear that Piccard is not even French. And it is alleged that Mick Jones was not even aboard that balloon. I demand a recalculation of their final latitude. This is a travesty. They have no honour!

Oh, I'm sorry, am I being a tad critical?

Ok, I think we have all heard this argument enough times that it is becoming a pain.

Doug: Do you not see how hypocritical your posting is? You are saying this is a "public" board so "you" should not apply an etiquette. But that in itself is applying an etiquette.

My view is this. Generally the users of this forum get on well with each other. There is no abuse on this forum. The users of this forum get on with the sponsors of this forum.

My personal view, if people don't like it here, they shouldn't come here.

Doug: If you really feel there are too many "corrections" etc in this forum, would you kindly list a few recent (last couple of weeks perhaps) examples. I cannot think of a single one.

Evidently my suggestion does not sit well with those of you consider yourselves the
leaders. No one responding seemed to get my point at all(exception NJ David), and that is sad. I will not bother you or post again.

I'll de-lurk for a moment.

You go to a new bar. You like the people & atsmophere, you stay and come back. If you don't, you leave and never come back.

You never try to get the people in the bar to change just because you arrived.

And by the way, this is a pretty nice bar. The next round on me.

back to lurking......

I am still learning english - thank you (and thanks to baobab who showed me some time ago how to have explanations handy on my PC).

I had no idea just now what a "bigwig" is - now I know:

Big"wig` (?), n. [Big,a.+ wig.] A person of consequence; as, the bigwigs of society. [Jocose] In our youth we have heard him spoken of by the bigwigs with extreme condescension. Dickens.

You know, I REALLY hate to say this (it's killing me), but arturo is right. Don't feel silly or embaressed Doug, and if you enjoy the forum and are learning, don't give up on it. Many of the folks here made even less graceful entrances to this forum than yours, and they are still around and learning and contributing.

No one really gets on these "leaders" or "bigwig" kicks here (as opposed to ALL other internet newsgroups/forums I've ever participated in) because we all take it with a grain of salt and try not to get personal or take things too seriously. So relax, enjoy, and give it another shot!

Doug...I'm finally going to weigh in and give my two paws on this...

There are no BigWigs on this board. I think we all play on an even playing field and we all TRY to treat newbees as equal as the old timers. SOmetimes I think the problem is the WAY THAT SUGGESTIONS ARE WRITTEN (I'm probably the biggest offender in this!)

As Matt Wald said.. take this with a grain of salt. If you check out other boards (and I have before this one) there are a few who try to control the whole place for themselves. NOT here. And I don't think the WebMasters at Inside Flyer would tolerate anyone trying to act high and mightly and superior to others because we're not.

So come back on board, DOug and you'll see we're not so bad.
