I was talking to a friend over the weekend who said he can give me some of his AAdvantage miles, for a small fee of course. I never knew airlines let you do this. Who else does this and is there always a fee involved?

I thought American stopped the transfer of miles in December 2002?

Has anyone tried it since then? We wanted to transfer some miles... but were told no.

After doing some research I found that AA is continuing to allow their AAdvantage members to transfer miles to other mileage members till May 31st. Continental also is running a special from March 11th till May 30th. These are the only two airlines that are allowing their FFlyers to transfer miles to other FFlyers. Both of course are charging a small fee to do so.

So, if your significant other has no AAdvantage account, get him/her one and then pick up the first 500 points here:

Then, you might be able to get 1,000 or so before the deadline (if you're lucky and qualify for a few surveys) here:

So there's an extra 1,500 AA miles to transfer before the deadline to combine accounts.

If you send in the Kellogg's cereal certiciates and have already used the one-time "starter certificate" for your account (as I have), print another one out here and send it in with 2 certificates for another 500 miles:

You may also be able to get another 1,000 for signing up for the AAdvantage eSummary on AAdvantage.com (however, I wasn't able to get these additional miles on my daughter's account. Not sure if they still offer these)

In any event, you should be able to get an easy 2,000-3,000 for a new account and then use that to top off your existing one.

IIRC, AA runs it through points.com. The max number of miles you can receive through miles transfer from any member is 15,000 per year. You can also buy miles for yourself and the cap for bought miles is 15,000 per year also.
