Burning down my DL Skymiles account:
100,000 (4 tix MCO...you can guess where)
25,000 CLE-CHS
Given their persistently diminishing value, I try to use the miles as I get them. However that's rather hard with CO and their absolute lack of award availability.

40K on US for SFO-Madrid (wanted to go biz class but they won't let you upgrade from cheapest tix)
70K on CO for SFO-Lima, but cancelled when my friend bailed.

In 2002, I redeemed 287,500 miles for 13 r/t coach class award tickets. (Did manage to get a few complimentary upgrades on those, too!)

That is not too far off the average of about 550,000 airline miles redeemed per year. I haven't changed my pattern, try to use them as fast as I can (but still seem to have around 500,000 doing nothing):
449,000 AC in 2001
100,000 Hilton in 2001
590,000 AC in 2000
357,000 AC in 1999
730,000 AC in 1998

I'm with yashan about being a hoarder. Only 15,000 redeemed on AC AP and zero hotels for 2002.
I know my FF balances not anywhere in the same universe as some here, but don't have luxury of collecting miles by travelling on business.

I spent 700k, by far the most ever in one year. This was motivated by a mix of opportunities, and fear of mile inflation.
At the same time I earned less than 200k, less than in any one year before.
But I guess I am in line with the Bush administration - spending my surplus, entering the no-fly zone, and trying to fill up the gap with my credit card (miles)

I spent 516,518 miles on 13 tickets from 5 airlines, ranging from tickets costing 10,000 miles to the Concorde. I had earned 900,000 miles over the last 6-7 years. I've had some time to travel this year and made the most of it.
After booking one last ticket, I will have just 20 miles remaining (many let you zero out your balance by giving them to charity).
