The zero miles may inspire me. This year I waited until around September to figure out I needed 60,000 miles on UA to hit 1K and a lot of segments on US to hit CP. It was a busy November and December. I plan on spreading it out next year.

That's one thing I like about AA's system of scheduling "miles toward e-upgrades" counter to run until the end of February.
When the YTD qualifying miles reset to zero, at least I'll have the miles-toward-upgrades counter to re-assure me that I'm still a traveler.

I wanted to see my UA miles shortly after midnight Jan. 1 but get the message below, a Y2K+3 error 
Still down 5 hours later.
It started working
At least I have the 500K miles to comfort me. I leave on a flight in a few hours so it wont be 0 YTD miles for long.

I started the year not with zero but with 2,000 miles from an expired set of 500-milers!
On second thought, that's NOT such a good thing -- it means my upgrade requests never go through!
And in any case, it does say: "Year-to-date Premier qualifying miles 0"
