Smoking indeed. From Orange County...must be in Fantasyland. Switch to HP? Been there, tried that. Not going back.

Switch to America Worst? What are people on? I'd fly Southwest over America's Worst. I don't understand how anyone can like HP unless they are used to the cattle-treatment. Tried it a few times, never again. I would stick to AA or UA. DL just doesn't have enough flights out of SNA.

I've flown HP many times and haven't had any problems. AlwaysFlyin's experience is consistent with HP's upgrade policy: if your upgrade doesn't clear in advance, it's first-come, first-served at the airport. This of course can work either for or against you.

Several things you might need to put into your consideration:
1. Only AA and United have airport lounges at SNA. The airport lounges offer great help if you fly red eyes (while most shops are closed) or on a flight delay situaiton.
2. AA has more direct flights to east coast while UA has to connect through LAX or SFO.
3. If you travel on full Y tickets, you will get upgrade on either AA or NW/CO. AA will give you better treatment because of the Q points. If you travel on discount tickets and want upgrade, go NW/CO. NW/CO will upgrade you without extra charge. AA you need to pay.
4. American West doesn't go some destination you travel. (No TN or DE). Even on the place they fly, they fly less frequently compared to others. Their frequent flyer program has fewer partners than others, which means fewer opportunities to redeem your miles.
