Several things you might need to put into your consideration:
1. Only AA and United have airport lounges at SNA. The airport lounges offer great help if you fly red eyes (while most shops are closed) or on a flight delay situaiton.

2. AA has more direct flights to east coast while UA has to connect through LAX or SFO.

3. If you travel on full Y tickets, you will get upgrade on either AA or NW/CO. AA will give you better treatment because of the Q points. If you travel on discount tickets and want upgrade, go NW/CO. NW/CO will upgrade you without extra charge. AA you need to pay.

4. American West doesn't go some destination you travel. (No TN or DE). Even on the place they fly, they fly less frequently compared to others. Their frequent flyer program has fewer partners than others, which means fewer opportunities to redeem your miles.
