FYI - My local Saturn Dealer has a nice little sign posted that says "$2500.00 Maximum for all Credit Card Transactions."

Maybe you can go in every so often and make a $2500.00 charge. You'd only have to do it 4 times

Good luck to you on this one...

I purchased a new car, total net sale price was just under $20,000. I put this on my UA Mileage Plus Visa card. No problems. Net sale price was non-negotiable for cash, paid with credit card, which was $1,710 below invoice.

When I asked to put my current car on my AmEx (having previously made sure they'd OK the charge) the dealer refused. I said something (nicely) about how their merchant agreement says they have to take it for any transaction. They offered me LoJack (which I had already ordered for $695) free if I gave them the same check I'd have to send AmEx a few weeks later. I did the math: at 2 per mile for the balance on the car I came out ahead with the LoJack, and at dealer cost for LoJack versus the fee they'd have to pay AmEx, they came out ahead too. We had a deal. (It was the same car that I got the Corn Flakes for in an earlier post in this thread.)

the big question is (if you chose to have car payments after giving them a down payment and some other upfront $)

Can you earn miles for car payments?...
I bet you can! So set up a loan for any remaining $$$ you cannot get miles on up front. Go w/that option and then pay it off using whatever means (credit card, etc.) if that gives you miles when paying your loan.

If speed is not your thing, distance may as well be. Enjoy and embrace it all!

FYI, UA and AA have terminated their programs. AFAIK, the only program to earn miles anymore is www.dealermiles.com. Other programs are for financing, or are like the Hertz program special offer.

And how many times have you frequent travelers been in a car in a strange town and BOOM, you hit a speed bump, curb, shopping cart, whatever, and you say, "Oh, well, glad it's a rental." Now, do you really want to go buy a used rental car from Hertz?
