Sorry, should have said for $40.00 more than my K fare. Space available Paid upgrades. While everyone in DFW stays with AA my DL flights always seem to have room in F.

AA has had congestion at DFW in the past, but I assume the move to a "rolling hub" will remove/reduce many of the problems you've encountered, as you won't have logjams for one hour and then a few of inactivity. Instead, AA can use ground staff, gates, etc. more efficiently. Since DFW originating pax don't have layovers there, they don't have to worry the increase in average connecting time that result.

C-A-R. If you are flying back to PHL on USX after leaving from terminal B, you got a little walk to get to your car(remember-if you have baggage, you can't get back into terminal F to take the shuttle.

I think the rule of thumb is that if you live in a hub city you could have a harder time with upgrades, especially if you're going to popular business cities at "business" times. Worst would be trips to the airline's other hubs at peak times.

Best is if you're in a "spoke" city and travel at times when there aren't as many business travelers.

Also, ever since CO and NW went to automated upgrades the success percantage of golds and especially silvers has dropped because platinums all get UGs first (previously they had to call in as soon as their time window opened, which some didn't do). And the schedule cutbacks have no doubt exacerbated the problem.

I dunno what route(s) you're flying but my K+ fares are now routinely hundreds more than insULT fares. Solution = fly AA.

Thanks to all for some good advice to date...

Still since I am basically a leisure traveler I am looking at flying either Friday evening or Saturday morning to SLC from IAH and returning Sunday evening to see my family. What pray tell would 'business times' be?

Also since SLC is a hub on DL but IAH is a spoke and it would be reversed on CO does this mean my chances to upgrade are better FROM or TO the HUB from the SPOKE?

I have a DL flight on a K and Q fare over Thanksgiving but I don't think that will be a good indicator of UG availability or maybe it will be with less business travelers?

Let me post some facts about Delta Skymiles.
#1 Even if your registered for a promotion online or got email or a postcard, Delta will NOT credit the promotion if the so desire, they will give any excuse, the dog took it.
#2 Don't waste your time contacting Delta, better results are achieved when the Better Business Bureau is contacted.

#3 Delta's availability for free seats is a gimmick, better off transfering the miles to a hotel program.
When flying get the miles posted elsewhere.
#4 the Skyteam group overall is good, besides Delta and Air France.
#5 Be aware that delta's 800 upgrade certificates apply only to very expensive rates, unlike the rest of the industry, unused upgrades will NOT be converted into miles like all the other carriers.

BOTTOM LINE IS: DON'T FLY WITH DELTA.

I have to disagree with two points above.

Getting awards seats has been very easy for me, have never had a problem (and I have used over 500K miles in the past 18 months.)

Sky team suck, it is not the individual members that are a problem, the alliance has no synergy. DL, Swiss Air, Austrain & Sabena, now that was a great alliance.

I redeem roughly half a million miles a year for award seats (never for upgrades), year after year. I almost never have a problem. The secret is to request award seats at two times only: (a) 331 days before the trip, when the flights first appear in Delta's reservation system (and you MUST call at 12:01 a.m. on that day, because 5 minutes later the inventory is gone), or (b) at the very last minute. Availability can be a problem at other times, at least for desirable destinations.
