"SSSS" on boarding passes -- actually decreases security?

"SSSS" on boarding passes -- actually decreases security?
Is it just me, or does it occur to anyone else -- that printing the dreaded "SSSS" on the boarding passes actually negates the purpose of the random security check?
I mean, if they want these security checks to find random people who are hiding weapons/whatever, printing the "SSSS" just alerts that person to get rid of all weapons/etc. Or pass it on to a co-conspirator who doesn't have "SSSS". Many people by now know what this code means.
Isn't this stupid? Or is it just me?

Agree completely.
The first time I got SSSSed, it was pointed out by the ticketing agent. "You have 'SSSS' on your boarding pass which means you'll get searched again at the gate. Once they search you, they won't let you wander away, so if you need to go to the restroom or anything make sure you do that in advance."
If there was any element of surprise (which is doubtful) it would have been destroyed by the heads-up.

BTW, isn't "SSSS" an United code? Don't other airlines mark their security risk boarding passes differently?
