No, it's far more irritating than that. Those who earned 1K under the normal criteria get nothing extra. Those given status as a gift, even if they didn't fly UA at all last year, get the 5,000 mile bonus (2,500 for premier execs).

AA has effectively annouced that they will match NWA's move:

...But within hours American Airlines, which said last year that it would eliminate blackout dates in 2003, accelerated its plan and said that it would lift its restrictions by Feb. 1, one month before Northwest.

I am surprised that there isn't any talk on the United "board" discussing the removal of FF miles from week-end web fares. Flying AA is my first choice, and the mileage I receive is a factor on flying. I can't believe that United, or any of the airlines would things which discourage travel rather than encourage travel. Do they not think that this affects loyalty. I would have to be desperate to fly on UA on a week-end web fare.

Airline / Change

Alaska - The old policy: Fly 10,000 miles, get 10,000 miles. Now it's fly 75,000 miles, get 50,000. And effective April 30, upgrades will cost 10,000 miles, up from 5,000.

American - Starting June 30, the number of miles needed to get a pair of upper-tier tickets to Hawaii and Europe will increase by as much as 25%.

Continental - Miles required for a free ticket during most of the year (September through May) rises to 25,000 from 20,000. You have until June 1 to book under the old rules.

Delta - Want to stay on Delta's Platinum list? You'll need to fly 20,000 miles in the first quarter, up from 15,000 last year.
Northwest Miles required for a free trip from September through May will rise to 25,000, up from 20,000. New rate begins June 1.

US Airways - Travelers used to be able to book free upgrades months in advance; now they have to wait until a few days before departure.

My understanding is that NW has only made Turkey and Cypress "Europe" rather than mideast. This would mean other destinations- via KLM- remain middle east, and significantly more mileage required. Am I correct?.

KLM has just reduced the number of points required for redemption of flight awards by 10% across the board.

This is in celebration of the Flying Dutchman Programme's 10th Anniversary, and apparently the reduction is permanent!

I think the vast majority of the people they are trying to attract with weekend specials are price-sensitive but not mileage-earning-sensitive. These flyers never get to a threshold level to earn bonus miles and see accounts, started with hope, simply grow too slowly to make miles-earning the primary factor. Unlike us of course.

I am a Delta frequent flyer. I can't seem to find this. I am not even sure what a Platinum list is! As a Platinum Medallion flyer, all I am required to do to renew is fly 100,000 base miles, 100 segments, or 20 transoceanic segments.

I have never had to fly a minimum amount before gaining or retaining status during the first quarter ... but then, even though I have been PM every year since the inception of the SkyMiles program, I don't fly enough to be on the "Platinum list" for Q1.

As an aside, since I am not a WSJ subscriber, I cannot read the article to which Doc referenced in his original post.

I think Doc is referring to a promotion that DL usually offers Medallions that didn't quite make it this year. Platinums that did not requalify can still do so by flying 20K miles in the first quarter this year??
