Not unless the class you're flying in is full will TG start to upgrade. Doesn't matter if your'e E or SE. First THAI GOLD members get 1st preference for seats, then other STAR GOLD members.

I am not sure about the flight segments you are doing.

Flying TG ZRH-BKK you (everybody, no status needed) can buy upgrades (instantly confirmable at booking time) at TG's office at Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich for only US$ 80 (upgrade eco to business, any paid eco fare). Flying the other way BKK-ZRH an upgrade costs US$ 800 (= 10 times more).

Businessclass tickets for INNER-Thailand flights cost only little more than eco: my return ticket BKK-URT (Urat Thani) in april-2000 costs only 28US$ more in business than in eco (and I get 125% miles with UA-MileagePlus instead of only 50%).

Rudi,

Could you give me a few more details about the paid upgrades...are these for any one sector, or just ZRH-BKK ?

Tks

I (positively) only know about ZRH-BKK-ZRH - I also know that I wasn't able to upgrade (with UA or LH miles or with paying an upgrade fee to TG) HKG-BKK and SIN-BKK.

I also work in Zurich (Kloten, to be exact) - would appreciate it if you could give me the exact fare code or reference for the TG upgrades you spoke of - I travel ZRH - BKK several times a year and would not object to spending 100 francs for an upgrade!

Rudi,

Thanks for the info...alas seems unlikely to be good LHR-BKK-LHR...

the above upgrade prices were given to me in feb-2000 at Zurichs downtown office (on a personal visit there, when I bought my april-2000 BKK-URT tickets)... and US$ 80 is about SFr 130 (not 100). Those upgrades are instantly (at booking time) confirmable.

J class service and seat comfort on THAI's MD-11 aircraft (which they use for ZRH flights) are really nothing to write home about...but I guess the 25% bonus points count for it (100% bonus on SK/LH)?

Oh how I wish there was a similar offer on the Stockholm-Bangkok flights!

celestar, you are pretty much correct--old style C-class seats on TG MD 11s. However, the center armrest is removable so you can really spread out comfortably (i.e like in half-empty coach) plus have the improved catering/service. My flt was last June.
