Rewarding higher spending LINEARLY: Quite a different story.
Full Fare/Business/First Class can often be 5x to 10x the cost of discount economy, yet I know of no airline which reflects THAT BIG a difference in mile or point earning.
The original question of this thread was why not a miles/$ structure. A nonlinear structure that has a few different rates of earning based on rough fare categories is far from a miles/$ structure.
Someone else mentioned Business ExtrAA. AFAICT, that's a credit card, and as such not much different than deals where an airline has a consumer credit card and has you earn EXTRA miles/$ when you charge tickets on said airline with said credit card. But that's IN ADDITION to the miles you earn non-linearly (relative to $ spend) for actually flying.
