Would you be interested in earning miles this way?

Bob - Thanks for your thoughts 1 and 2 - defintely things to consider.
#4: We do look for funding anywhere we can, but sometimes it is restricted since these trips are sponsored by our church. The doctors and nurses (and everyone that goes) is volunteering their time, etc. Each person has to raise the money to cover their costs, maybe about $800 per person. (Our church budget also kicks in some money to the overall trip.) We also look for donations of supplies, and we buy the prescriptions and vitamins that we cannot get donated.

I would think a better way to solicit donations is to see if you can get a local media outlet (TV, newspaper or radio) to sponsor your trip and do a human interest story on the work you're doing there. Or, at the least, to get them to give you some free ad time.
As for the original post, miles would sway my donation but in the wrong direction. I may be in the minority; I don't want any portion of my philanthropy wasted on giving something to me. I want every dollar to go towards the cause I'm donating to.
That's why, when I open those envelopes asking for money that have a dollar or stamps or somesuch attached, I happily pocket the dollar, use the labels/stamps, and go on my way. If they have enough funds to market by giving away money, they don't need mine.

Here's a thought...
In 2001, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Aadvantage program, AA had a promo where if you collected miles from 20 different partners, you got 20K bonus miles. Well, someone here discovered some charity called the Erin Go Bragh Foundation that offered a couple of miles per dollar, no minimum, and next thing you know, hundreds or thousands of FT'ers were sending them small checks.
AA has promised promotions for the 25th, starting this May. No one knows yet if it will include a similar promo, but there's a good chance it might. Now, if AA doesn't charge a fixed fee to xfer these miles, and if you have a volunteer who can do all the processing of these small donations for you, you could be poised for big things.
For these bonus-hunters, the number of miles per dollar is not important; only the minimum donation to earn is. If you set up for, say, a $10 minimum, one mile per dollar, and if AA runs a similar promo, then you've got a great chance to recieve thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in donations.
