My husband's facility had a Singapore Air flight that said it didn't have fuel to make it to Canada and would have to land at the then-closed OAK. Two F-16s escorted it in.
As the FAA was aware what was happening on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, there was much discussion about whether or not to shoot it down. That would have certainly been an added emotional strain on the nation.
