How about for us Canucks with US FF plans (ie - I've got NW with a whopping 4K in it).. doesn't seem like there's much we can do..

So wouldn't that work out to about 3,200 Miles, U.S. ???

LOL

Thankfully, that isn't the case. I honestly wish I could transfer my miles out of NW (and possibly DL) into my CO FF account.. I probably won't be flying NW any time soon (unless I repeat the ordeal I went through last Christmas), so what options do I have other than donating my miles?

Well, you could book and stay at Holiday Inn hotels between October 22 and December 16, and get 1,000 bonus miles on Northwest each time. Of course, it will take a lot of stays to bring your mileage up to a decent level but I thought NW miles never expire?

Exactly what it was. Never been on Delta or a Partner in my life......... I guess NW may be a partner, flew them one R/T in 1999.

The Continental-to-Hilton transfer is no longer available. You can still convert 5K American miles into 10K Hilton HHonor points, but you have to pay $25 for each transfer. Not worth it in my opinion unless you need the Hhonor points for immediate use.

excuse me. this discussion so far is based on your not being able to do any flying with 10,000 miles.

That's sort of a wrong assumption.

Currently United and American are offering trips of something like 800 or 1,000 miles for 15,000 miles.

There are a number of ways to bump up 10,000 miles to 15,000 (idine, mileageplusmall) and you can bump up 10,000 to 25,000 by taking a credit card and using it once and that gives a free cross country trip.

So the question becomes how far under 10,000 miles are they.

by the way, you can keep the miles alive by doing any activity. Normally renting a car can do it. It doesn't matter who you fly. Just rent and credit the airline that you haven't used in a while.

DarcyMae, please notice that AsiaTraveler said 'via Amtrak.' 5K CO or YX --> 5K Amtrak --> 10K Hilton.
Also, if U get lucky, AA sometimes doesn't enforce that nasty new $25 fee.

wow.. I have not aware of this offer from United. I couldn't find a link on United website for this award. It would be nice to redeem 7K United miles for one day pass on United. Do I have to travel on United that day to access the RCC lounge?

See nearly identical question in post #8, and answer in post #12, above.

Note that DL does some sort of wild-eyed promo about once every 2 years or so. My wife and daughter are both sitting on 20k because they opened their DL accounts through a Yahoo link about 2 years ago that included 10k account-opening miles. (It lasted literally for a day or less - I think they intended it to be 1,000 miles, as it was later revised to that.) Then they "dashed for the gate," so now they're sitting on 20k.

In other words, 10k is worthless, but just sit on it for a while and keep your eyes open for other promos. Watch for a particularly-juicy DL Amex teaser.

If it's been almost 3 years since last activity, goose the account with an iDine.

Ja_user could transfer the 10K into Mrs. Pinniped's account to = 30K for a ticket to Mexico or Caribbean, or 5K into each account for 2 free domestic tickets--if Pinniped pays the outrageously nasty $125 transfer fee, which may be tolerable in this case.

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than 500 miles for a day in the RCC. You get overpriced drinks, underwhealming service and the food (breakfast in particular) is not really any good.
