Combining Delta and UA miles.
I have 40K miles on Delta and 25K on United. I want to go to Australia later this year and was looking to see if I can combine these to get one award. It looks like I need 60K miles on United to get a ticket to Australia. I called United but they told me I cannot combine these even though the airlines are partners. I am new to this whole FF business and I guess I should have been thinking ahead, but it's too late now. Any help/hints would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are lots of different types of partners. This partnership and just about all of them keep the miles in different accounts. No combining them. Sometimes you can select which plan you put your miles in.

Miles on Delta and United cannot be combined. Only option I can think of is if you have a Diners Club, where you can move your miles from the two airlines to Diners Club reward points - you'll take a big 50% loss, and subsequently use a double transfer promotion, like the current one with BA. I dont know if 60K miles on BA will give you the award you are looking for.
