Where does one find the "great" flight prices?

I have been reading through all todays posts and found there were some great fares. Went to bestfares.com and saw some listed - Went to Delta.com - nothing. Looking for flight
from MKE or Chicago (either airport) to
Las Vegas. Prices are high especially from the Midwest just about anywhere. Tried "package vacations" where prices seem
better. Any ideas for quick websites besides priceline? Have been email registering at all the posts I find on this board. Thanks for all the help.

Las Vegas is hard to get good deals. If you can, go for mid week. Try Travelocity or ITN. Package/tour deals usually are not a good deal. They advertise sucker deals that require you to fly on the third tuesday of the second week and share a room with a group of truckers that have been on strike.

When you ask for better flights or rooms, get out the visa card.

I find the best site for locating inexpensive domestic travel is http://www.air-fare.com

You'll need to understand fare booking classes, and use an engine like http://www.itn.net (in advanced mode) to ensure you get your fare. Alternatively, you can call a travel agent with details of the fare you wish to book.

Cheapest fares from ORD to LAS are:

CHICAGO TO LAS VEGAS - ROUND TRIP FARES
1) LOWEST STANDARD EXCURSION FARE - NO REFUND ( UP TO $100 AIRLN CHNG FEE )
NJ-T $ 198.00 7 -DAY ADV/
2) 2ND LOWEST STANDARD EXCURSION FARE - NO REFUND ( UP TO $100 AIRLN CHNG FEE ) [- TKT BY 12JUN -]
[- COMPLETE BY 18DEC -]
ALL $ 218.00 14-DAY ADV/2-DAY MIN TUE-WED/SAT
3) LOWEST 21-DAY ADVANCE - NO REFUND ( UP TO $100 AIRLN CHNG FEE )
[- COMPLETE BY 31DEC -]
SY-L/NJ-Z $ 298.00 14-DAY ADV/ TUE-THU
4) LOWEST 7-DAY ADVANCE - NO REFUND ( UP TO $100 AIRLN CHNG FEE ) [- TKT BY 1JUN -]
[- BLACKOUT 31AUG01 03SEP01 10NOV01-11NOV01 21NOV01 25NOV -]
[- COMPLETE BY 18DEC -]
ALL $ 248.00 7 -DAY ADV/1-DAY MIN
5) LOWEST REFUNDABLE FARE
HP-W $ 626.00 NO ADV/

Cheapest fares from MKE to LAS are:

MILWAUKEE TO LAS VEGAS - ROUND TRIP FARES
1) LOWEST STANDARD EXCURSION FARE - NO REFUND ( UP TO $100 AIRLN CHNG FEE )
TZ-K/YX-K $ 258.00 NO MIN STAY
2) 2ND LOWEST STANDARD EXCURSION FARE - NO REFUND ( UP TO $100 AIRLN CHNG FEE )
HP-L $ 271.00 14-DAY ADV/SAT STAY * OTHER LIMITS APPLY
3) LOWEST REFUNDABLE FARE
[- ADD FUEL SURCHARGE -]
YX-K $ 618.00 NO ADV/
4) SECOND LOWEST REFUNDABLE FARE
[- ADD FUEL SURCHARGE -]
HP-H/AA-K/UA-M/NW-B/TW-B $ 649.00 NO ADV/
Hope this helps!

Welcome to FlyerTalk, MaryAO!

For starters I would visit, the Best place to monitor find cheap fares for mileage runs? topic in the Mileage Run forum. It is full of ideas and links to various travel sites. Although the topic pertains to Mileage Runs, many of the ideas and sources should help you acquire "great" flight prices.

Good luck and happy travels.

MaryAO - I've found some good flight options on orbitz.com. They are supposed to launch the full site sometime next month but if you sign up for the beta-test, you can search, compare and purchase flights on the site. I usually comparison shop between orbitz, expedia and travelocity and have had the most luck lately with orbitz. Good luck!

Kokonutz, I checked out this site and it says it is beta version. Did they have an earlier version which you experienced?

I like the option here to check from other airports too - kinda like but different from Travelocity's option. But, I find this no different from the other site - www.travelbyus.com as they are also powered by the same engine...

I also check Digital Cities every day. Select your city, then go to Shopping and Services --> Travel and Booking. You'll get listings of cheap airfares to various destinations, with carrier, including weekend "e-fares." I don't know if this is an automatic feed from some reservation system, or if there's a human editor involved. I also don't know how fresh the fares are. I have, however, used it to find cheaper fares from regional airports serving my metropolitan area.

It's easier if you go to the specific page you need then bookmark it for daily reference.

I also found a fare of 218 after tax Chicago to Las Vegas, on National Airlines (there seems to be a bug in their software when it comes to looking up fares out of O'Hare, although they do fly there--the fare I found is out of Midway). Oddly, Southwest wants 398 on that route!

ATA has excellent fares out of MDW as well, I don't know if they fly to LAS and they are not the most comfortable planes (1 class 757s stuffed to the gills) but they are cheap.

Mary, like you, I live in Wisconsin and I think that we are "between fare sales" right now. I don't know when you are planning to travel, but LAS is often available out of MKE at decent fares via NWA, Midwest Express, Sun Country and various charters. It is worth a little extra to fly out of MKE when you add in hassles, parking fees, etc. If you've got some time, I would hold out on booking until a deal comes your way because it almost certainly will.

Orbitz is up and running. Seems very good for domestic itineraries. Nothing special with international.

I have a different opinion than nostresshere on the package operators. I have had great experiences with Funjet, Apple, Vacation Express etc. on packages as well as Air Only deals. The real deals are not available all the time and not sure who all flies out of your area, but I think at least Funjet and Apple do. I know that Funjet updates their "Hot Deals" section on Friday nights, so check there regularly, and Apple is kind of sporadic, sometimes they don't have any new "Sizzlin Specials" for a couple of weeks and then all of the sudden they will have a couple in one week. Check your local Sunday Paper Travel Section, for what Tour Operators operate out of your area, and then look up their web sites for last minute or limited availability deals. I flew Funjet out of Atlanta to Las Vegas one time, for $350, that included RT Air, 4 nights hotel and 4 days rental car. I had to drive to Atlanta, but the airfare alone out of NC was over $700RT at the time.
