Getting cheesed of with MNBA and their "Suntrust" card, not earning bugger all. So am now considering getting a card where at least we will earn decent miles/rewards of some kind.

Gosh, too many to count. Right now, get a Hilton Hhonors AMEX Platinum and get 10,000 bonus Hilton points with first use, w/ a possible additional 10,000 for staying a few times at Hilton. Or, get a Bank One Priority Club Visa and get 10,000 bonus Priority Club points with first use. Or, get a Gold AMEX Skymiles and get 12,500 or maybe 15,000 Delta Skymiles with first use. Go to the airline or hotel program you are interested in and usually there is a link to sign up with their co-branded CC w/a hefty signing bonus.

Too many choices sometimes make your judgement foggy. There is a wealth of quality advice and knowldege on this forum. However you have to be smart to chose the best for you as this does not gurantee all the options suit your particular situation.

Lots of "best credit card" threads here...need more info to point you in the right direction, first and foremost would be whether you're looking for a U.S. or U.K. card. Second question would be what kind of rewards are you looking for? Quick but small cash or petrol rewards, free hotel stays, airline miles, home-grown points, etc. Do you need specialty features such as those you'd get from Diner's or one of the super-premium Amexes?

In the U.S., I think most FT'ers look at the Starwood Amex as the "gold standard" for rewards cards. Any comparison of cards usually includes that one or the HHonors Amex. But it doesn't really matter if you are dead set on some other particular type of reward.

Although we are Brits, living just north of tampa. We are here full time.

Dont spend a lotta money, golf/regular shopping/home depot projects, the cars etc. I pay for nearly everything either cash or the debit card. We fly, "back home", once a year. So we aint gonna get a heck of a lot of sky miles I guess.

So perhaps a straight forward cash back..................

Well, in order to take advantage of credit card rewards, you kind of have to go through a change in mindset: you start running everything through the credit card. Your golf, shopping, home depot, petrol, auto maintenance, some of your monthly bills, groceries, restaurants, and almost any other little expense you have: you push it through the credit card and pay it off every month.

The catch: the rewards cards like SPG Amex have very punitive interest rates, so your change in mindset must also come with the absolute discipline to pay the bill in full every month.

If you don't want to undergo this fundamental change, then a quick & easy cash rebate card is probably best. You get a couple bucks a month in cash or petrol and you're done with it. The hotel/air cards become worthwhile when you log significant volume.

Income isnt a problem and we pay off everything. Own 2 homes, here and UK with no mortgages so we pay as we go.

any good CC deals with miles for no annual fee going on now? i got the AA for 15,000 miles, no fee (still pending), but any others?

AMEX Gold Skymiles ad says 10,000 bonus for sign-up, but, I got 12,500. Don't know why. Annual fee is $85 but waived for first year.

The HHonors Amex has no annual fee and a juicy sign-up bonus. Marriott Visa and SPG Amex have low annual fees and sign-up bonuses that far outweigh the fee. I'd recommend all three cards to anyone - reevaluate whether to keep the ones with the annual fees at the end of the year.

As with many things, if you're already at a premium level, credit cards give you more for less. If you're a United 1K, for example, your Mileage Plus Visa doesn't have any limit to how many miles you can earn, and they'll reimburse the annual fee. I imagine most of the major airlines have a similar deal.
