I used to recall seeing threshold bonuses on my Gold and Platinum statements- flying a certain amount of miles and awarded with a percentage more miles.

Whatever happened to flying say 75,000 miles a year and receiving a 10,000 mile threshold?? Have all of the airlines eliminated these?

Yes.

Well I think it's just that you get the bonus miles for each mile you fly over certain thresholds.

i.e.: 25% bonus at 25,000 miles for each segment flown or 100% at 100,000 miles. Does that make sense?

Continental eliminated the treshold bonuses in the 1999 Elite program. the bonuses were:

• 5,000 bonus miles after 20,000 flight miles/25 segments. (Bronze Elite)
• 7,500 bonus miles after 35,000 flight miles/40 segments. (Silver Elite)
• 10,000 bonus miles after 50,000 flight miles/60 segments. (Gold Elite)

They were in addition to the Elite level bonus percentage.

I miss those miles.

United had what they called "plateau" bonuses. If I recall correctly, they were awarded at 35,000, 45,000, 55,000, and 75,000 miles (i.e. not related to Premier thresholds). I thought most FF programs did away with these somewhere around 1997-1998.

And look at how the travel consumer has just "let" the airlines, as pointed out all of them, elliminate this bonus. Now we also seem to be letting Delta elliminate the SWU, have Simply Good Business, and no upgrades on L and U fares. We've let NW elliminate miles on cyber savers, and to top it all off we've just let CO, followed by others, raise the change fee when the costs to change tickets (e-tickets) is less than paper.

The consumer should start to take a stance. Like what would co do if say 5,000 flyers emailed them when they made the change fee announcement, and said they were going with another airline. Or what if literally tens of thousands of flyers left Delta.

But instead we compalin about it, a little, either on these boards, to our seat mates, or someone at the office, while not taking steps to impact the suppliers who keep devaluing these programs. If we look in 5 years, what else will be devalued.

One of the reasons I love AS. Although increasingly I am flying their partners (NW, CO), I still throw my miles to AS. They still have these threshhold bonuses. A 10,000 mile bonus after 35,000 actual miles and another for every 10,000 actual miles after that up to 75,000 miles. You get another 25,000 mile bonus if you hit 100,000 miles in a calendar year. It can sure add up.
