Hah, this you have to take from me! I just returned yesterday from a trip to Italy that included Venice.
Stayed at the Locanda Gaffaro, a newly opened hotel. Cheap (paid 170,000 lire per room night for 2 people in a single room during peak season), and includes breakfast. Room has complete facilities, TV, phone, double bed, heater and even a sunroof where you can pop your head out of the roof to watch the outside world go by!
They also have double and triple rooms that are huge! I was given a tour of the hotel as I was basically there on a hotel search trip for a travel society. The owners, Davide and Dad are very amiable and speak flawless English, and every morning they insist on personally bringing breakfast to your room and making up the place.
The hotel is a 15 minutes' stroll from Piazza San Marco, and 3 minutes from the Central Bus Station and Santa Lucia Rail Station. Quiet neighbourhood with relatively cheaper restaurants and tabachiere.
It's really a good bet. Check it out www.gaffaro.com
