Brokerage promos?

I need to deposit my year-end bonus into a new brokerage account. What are the best offers out there right now with Ameritrade or other brokers (TD Waterhouse, etc)

Last year I got a Palm Tungsten T3 from Ameritrade which was pretty nice.

There are lots of them listed on the Finance Page of my website, Free Frequent Flyer Miles. The best depends on which airlines you prefer, how much money you want to deposit and how much you intend to trade. You may want to consider opening accounts with one or more banks first, then using money in those accounts to open one or more brokerage accounts.

I recently opened up a new account with Ameritrade for the 20k Starwood points. First half of points posted within a week. (Note that second half posts after 6 months so long as you don't withdrawal below the initial minimum.) Also happy with my limited trading with Ameritrade so far.

Tried a bonus offer with TD Waterhouse last year. They were completely clueless all the way around.

I've already done the starwood one, I'm not sure that they would honor a second account opened.

A word of warning about Ameritrade:

If you're planning on doing a high volume of trades, Ameritrade makes it very difficult for you to generate your Schedule D at the end of the year. Most brokerages allow you to download your transactions into TurboTax, but Ameritrade does not. Instead, they try and sell you an additional service called GainsKeeper.

I have some money that's been doing its own mileage runs for years. Most of these offers require the money/stock to stay put for six months. That's exactly how long this money visited Ameritrade, TD Waterhouse, Chase Bank, E*Trade and Fidelity. I thank these financial institutions for oh so many miles.

pgary, I noticed the following on your website:

Fidelity Investments offers 5,000, 15,000, or 25,000 United Airlines miles for opening most any type of account with them, or adding to an existing one. Fidelity offers a regular brokerage account and a very large number of mutual funds. You may meet the minimums by transferring securities from another broker to a Fidelity brokerage account. Details here. Offer expires December 31, 2005.
But when I go to the site, it says it's for new customers only, and I can't find anything about the " . . . or adding to an existing one."

Has the offer changed, or am I missing something?

Ameritrade and Schedule D

I also put $25,000 into Ameritrade. Got the full 20,000 SPG points within a week or so.

There is a free program for creating a Schedule D from Ameritrade called Tradekeeper.

It's a bit cumbersome but works fine.

You can find it here: http://americanware.netfirms.com/

Don't believe it's possible to get the full points immediately.

I also tried to open an account with TDWaterhouse and while not completely clueless the broker told me that, as I had an account with one of their predecessor, I was not eligible for the miles bonus.

Immediate Ameritrade credit to SPG

My experience differs from Sirecca. I did get the whole 20,000 points credited immediately. Lucky me (maybe they will give me 20,000 more after 6 months!!)

Although it doesn't say so in the offer, you can add money to an existing account for miles. I called them to verify. The customer rep said he coded my account for the miles. Then I transferred securities to them. Miles posted promptly.

Have a TD waterhouse account amd satisfied w/ their new $9.95 commissions and the 30 free trades...not sure of any mileague bonuses they might have, but their customer service, etc has been very helpful as I also rolled my 401k over to them.

TDWaterhouse's commissions are only that low if you trade above a certain threshold or have > $500K in assets. Be warned that your trade commissions may be higher if you have less in your accounts.

I have used the Ameritrade one for *wood points, and I still have my account with them. I'm not sure if I like it all that much or not, but there was no problem related to the *wood points, so they've been very good as far as that's concerned.

True--I make about 10-12 trades per month which qualifies me for their active trader pricing....
