17,500 United Mileage Plus Visa

http://www.firstusa.com/cgi-bin/webc...cont&mkid=6Z55

I received this link today from United as an e-mail. 17,500 is the best deal i've seen for a card in a while. $85 Annual Fee Gold Card. Just thought I would give everyone a heads up if it hasn't been seen yet.

I still prefer the 15K with no fee for the first year offer that is floating around somewhere here. I applied about 2 weeks ago but have not heard from them yet.

For those concerned about their credit rating, I think the 20k for $60 offer makes better sense. Even if you look at it that you are paying $60 for 5k more miles, that's a very good rate. Since there is realistically a limit on how many cards you can apply for (I apply for a new one every year, I'm not sure I'd do it more often), you are limited on how many cards you can get (bonuses you can receive). It would therefore would seem to make sense to maximize what you are getting with each card. This is even more true since the 20k offer seems to be an abberation that at any time could get pulled for the more widely advertised 15k offer.

The $20k has a double miles for tuition and books until dec 31. Depending on my credit limit, I could have a coach ticket to spain in time for my study abroad in may.

Thumbs up

The gold card also has 2,500 bonus miles each year on renewal. I wish my other cards did that!

Where do you see the tuition/books offer? That could be worth 10,000 miles for me unless there is a cap. 20K + 10K and I'm in on my way to a freebie.

The double miles for school expenses through Dec is for all UA CCs - not just if you sign up for the 20K bonus. Bonus miles will be awarded after the end of the promo. I am looking forward to a 20K or so bonus.

There is a cap - but at 60K I don't think it should be a problem for most us.

How is annual fee wavied?

I applied for the no-fee-for-first-year and was approved. However, the fee was still charged. Yesterday when I disputed the fee, CSR said that the fee was always first charged and a credit would be given 12 months later.

Has anyone encountered this response before?

I'm not sure whether I should just cancel the card right now. (The miles have posted.) Is it possible that they remove the miles?

If you dont want to pay the fee - cancel the card right away. But before I would do that, I would ask to speak to someone higher up the food chain than the customer service rep. They are limited in what they can do.

Also - I have noticed that if you tell them to cancel your card, they transfer you to someone who has much more leeway on making changes to your account. They want to keep your business.

Anyway - I would speak to a higher up, then if that des not work, cancel the card unless they truly waive the fee for the first year.

We received the 15,000 mile card a couple of months ago and have not been charged the fee so I don't think the "credit" in 12 months is accurate.

I just signed up for the 20k miles one. I think thats about 3/10 of a cent a mile.
Something else I am considering, refererring a friend will get you 5k. I have a friend who will do it if I pay part of the $60, then I am going to transfer his 15k to my account. Good times I thnk.

You can transfer United miles? I am slightly ignorant to their program rules

The 60K mileage cap only applies to Mileage Plus members without status. If you hold elite status (Premier or higher) the mileage cap is lifted, and you can receive unlimited miles.
