Ive been viewing for a while and whilst i know most people are US based i was wondering are any of you aware of any good way to earn miles in UK. Im a member of UA Milage Plus, BMI Diamond Club (Both Star Alliance) and also Aer Lingus Gold Circle (OneWorld). I feel that we europeans get a raw deal when it comes to easily earning miles as we dont seem to get miles for things like bank loans etc. Ive been travelling for years and barely have enough miles for an upgrade!
Many thanks for your invaluable tips thus far.

I will have earnt about 200,000 BA Miles this year from non-flying activities (mainly Travelex, Tesco and NatWest). This is enough for about 16 upgrades from WT+ to Business, or four (if you use Amex 2-for-1 voucher) totally free Club tickets to most places on the planet. Spend a bit of time reading FT and you will be flying off in your BA flat bed in no time!

Apart from flying, most of mine come from Citibank and RBS AA credit cards - unfortunately is 1 mile / 1 spend (nowhere near as good as 1mile / $ ) but it soon adds up.
UA do do a credit card for the UK if you have not already got one - and usually a good sign-up bonus as well.

Cooperative Bank Travel Credit Card
Another credit card to consider is the newish "travel" credit card. See Travel Card for full info.
You get 1p for every pound you spend. The money accumulated can only be spent at the Coop Travelcare shops, where it can be used to be flights, holidays etc.
I just got a fare LHR to JFK on UA for 200, all paid for by the money accumulated. Better still, I will also earn UAL mileage on this flight and hence get another 8000 or so miles.
There are some additional travel insurance benefits with the card, but nothing particularly special.
