Mileage Auctions
I am doing a thesis on the relationships that airlines have with their customers online... Anybody know if there are any airlines that have online auctions using miles as the currency.... do they only offer flights to bid for or are there other items available.... memorabilia, life time top tier membership etc? Can anyone think of any other interactive functionalities that airlines offer on thier websites... what should they offer?

United had a "blind" bid where the top 50 offers got First Class Round Trip to Seattle, one night hotel, and a VIP tour of Boeing, focusing on the 777 (before it was released). We had lunch with Boeing engineers and/or sales people and instead of walking on the catwalks the tour was inside the hangers.

In addition to the United Airlines auction sbrower won (lucky stiff!), they've had frequent auctions, with both domestic and foreign auctions. I suspect United's PR department could give you more complete details.

On-the-route-to-extincton Canadian Plus offered this. A few years back, I bid and won a business class r/t from LHR to Canada for 65K miles (75-80k value then). Availability around X'mas was surprisingly good.
