Miles from Kellogg Cereal

I've been waiting six weeks for American Airlines to credit my frequent flyer account with miles from Kellogg cereals. Anybody else experiencing this?

SST Jun 3, 2000 7:49 am

Yep. But wait: I've sent in about 10 of
these 500-mile certs from various promotions
(San Francisco Chronicle, Healthy Choice, Kelloggs, Wyndham), and each has taken about
*3 MONTHS* to credit. Got them all, though.

FlyAAway Jun 3, 2000 10:11 am

Yes, painfully slow. The wait is worth it. A year ago, I was eating cereal and getting no miles!

The availability seems to have increased; boxes can be found in most Southern California supermarkets.

Good Luck.

ASCJSTEP Jun 4, 2000 5:10 pm

I too have sent in the certs about 8 weeks ago, no posting yet but still waiting! It looks as though three months is the minimum http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

burkey Jun 4, 2000 7:24 pm

I got mine in about 3 wks, at the most. And yes, this seemed to be unusually fast.

Efrem Jun 4, 2000 8:16 pm

My two batches of 5 each also posted in 3-4 weeks.

SST Jun 5, 2000 2:32 pm

I was reading in the former post that numerous folks (in/around Chicago???) were getting corn flakes for $1.29 a box, with the cert on them. No such luck in N. California; the best you can find is $4 for the Bran cereals; typical, I guess, since I also pay $2.29 for self-serve premium, and my parking at work costs me $400/month. Everybody gets fleeced here!)

Anybody SEEN a box of Cornflakes with the cert here around San Francisco???? What chain?

SPort Jun 5, 2000 2:47 pm

SST: In northern California I'm mostly seeing the NASCAR Corn Flakes boxes. Last week I did find the large boxes of Corn Flakes with AA certificate's at the Raley's/Bel Air/Nob Hill chain, for $2.89 though.

Papollo Jun 5, 2000 7:40 pm

Here in rural Maine the Walmart Superstores are selling the 12 oz Corn Flakes boxes for $1.48. You have to be careful though, as they're mixing boxes on the shelf with and without the coupons.

And, my AA miles are posting about 4-6 weeks after I mail them in.

wannagotoo Jun 5, 2000 8:14 pm

Here we go again. I am still checking WalMart stores since the last time info was posted, WalMart seemed to be the place to go. I found three stores in my area, spent Sunday (a month ago) driving to the stores just to find boxes with cars, not airplanes. Here in So Cal, we continue to have only the $4 boxes of cereal with the offer, hardly worth paying that much. Good luck finding the corn flakes!!

Efrem Jun 6, 2000 8:48 pm

In my area (northwest Boston suburbs) the Market Basket chain has the 12-oz. Corn Flakes at $2.19. My local store got me six cases by special order. They went along with "no planes, no sale" when I explained the reason. The cereal went to a local food bank. I kept the coupons. (Their volunteers and I had fun tearing up boxes.) Not quite in Pudding Guy's league, but you do what you can ...

By the way - if you ever have to fill out 90+ coupons (I eat the stuff, too) you may care that labels are OK as long as ALL the info is there. (I called Kellogg.) My computer prints them by the dozen onto Avery label paper.

Thanks for the call to Kellogg's. Filling those certificates out does get tedious. Worth it, however.

Papollo Jun 7, 2000 9:05 am

Posting update - I sent in 30 certs from Lewiston ME on 5-6, and they posted today (6-7).

protomartyr Jun 7, 2000 11:09 am

On the subject of labels, I often use plain old return address labels when filling out order/entry forms. They've always been accepted (if not welcomed) in my experience. Just be considerate enough not to use ones with microscopic print.

Efrem Jun 8, 2000 7:53 am

Right. Kellogg's said address labels are fine as long as you also fill in your AA number and your phone number(s), which the usual address label doesn't have. Given that I had 90+ of the things and expected more, I went the custom-label route with all the info preprinted.

sbrunton Jun 8, 2000 8:33 pm

When mailing these coupons, do they have to be mailed in sets of five, or can I mail ten or more together?

wonderer Jun 8, 2000 10:31 pm

A friend of mine helps at a paper recycling collection spot once a month and has been able to score (snatch) some "boxes with planes". She hopes that this summer will even be better, now that the boxes are out in all the stores.

Dumpster Diver Gal is what I call her.

The truth is I envy her and she promised to let me tag along this summer.

Efrem Jun 9, 2000 8:19 am

sbrunton: According to the folks at Kellogg's (800-962-1413), you can send in any number as long as it's a multiple of 5. (I sent in 15 last week, but they haven't posted yet.)

TexasYankee Jun 9, 2000 6:51 pm

Has anyone seen them in Austin, Texas? I have checked every store imaginable with no luck! (For corn flakes that is ...) The real expensive cereals are there but one can only eat so much Granola!

DC_flyer Jun 10, 2000 6:38 am

I did receive my 5000 points from AA. It took seven weeks.

Also, Safeway grocery stores put the 18 oz Corn Flakes on sale for $2.00 about once a month. If you have the Safeway card, there is no limit to the number of boxes you can buy.

pumpkin Jun 11, 2000 5:58 am

What Walmarts in west side of Rochester, ny carries Kelloggs corn flakes or any of the airplane cereals ? Wegmans is so expensive?

Papollo Jun 11, 2000 10:08 am

Just bought 19 boxes of 12oz Corn Flakes at my local Walmart - $1.48 per box.

protomartyr Jun 11, 2000 8:58 pm

Papollo:

Just curious. What's your milage total to date from Kellogs?

Papollo Jun 12, 2000 5:55 am

With this purchase, 30,000+ miles. But, most have not yet posted...

DC_flyer Jun 12, 2000 6:03 am

Papollo,

The next question then is, what are you going to do with 300 boxes of Corn Flakes?

Papollo Jun 12, 2000 6:10 am

I've managed to "dispose" of them. Some have gone to neighbors, others to co-workers. I've done some cooking using recipes from the www.kelloggs.com website. The bulk have gone to a local food pantry. They are most appreciative, and can use all I can give them.

Oddly enough, nobody in my house likes Corn Flakes. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I buy other Kelloggs cereal for our own consumption. Try their Just Right - it's really good, but pricey.

Mvic Jun 12, 2000 8:17 am

Even at the lowest price I have seen posted of $1.29 you would still need to buy 250 boxes to get enough miles for a RT in the US. That's $322.5 not including tax which doesn't strike me as being a particular bargain for a RT ticket within the US.

Unless one is actually going to eat all this cereal anyway and doesn't mind storing it the promotion doesn't seem worth it. Am I missing something? I hope so, as even though I don't eat the stuff the shelves here are replete with 12oz boxes for $1.42 at local Schnucks stores.

MVIC -- You are missing something. When buying boxes in bulk I'm sure most of us are donating them to a local food bank.It may cost a little more for the free ticket, but at least some others less fortunate are also benefitting.

Papollo Jun 12, 2000 9:50 am

Thanks Sydneyjb. The benefits aren't necessarily monetary. It's fun to collect miles this way, and it goes to a good cause.
And, I hope to use the miles for a trip for my family and myself.

I was a subject in a WSJ story about collecting miles in this way. What a rush http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Even with the lowest price of $1.29 you would be better off donating money directly to the food bank (having volunteered in one in Chicago for 4 years I would imagine that in most cases the money would be far more useful to them than cornflakes) and buying your ticket in the vast majority of instances. Not putting people down for trying to do something good (nor making any assumptions either) just trying to see if this is worth participating in. Still don't see the point unless you would be buying the cornflakes anyway.

The miles are an okay value, the real "Value" in the long run in collecting FF miles on AA is that when you hit 1M miles you are clasified as Gold for life. So any miles add up.

On top of everyone trying to top the pudding guy!

mileshound Jun 14, 2000 9:56 am

Using coupons cuts the cost. If you redeem the miles for a trip on an expensive route or for FC then the savings are better.

------------------

Mvic Jun 14, 2000 9:59 am

If gold level gives you free upgrades then I can see the value. Also true that some times you just can't get the cheap fares and you have to break out the miles. Still, it isn't the kind of pudding guy deal where it is worth ordering kellogs by the palette.

Efrem Jun 15, 2000 1:03 pm

Confirming what Kellogg's told me on the phone: sending multiples is OK. Mine posted today. They post as multiple lines of 500 each which seems like more effort, but as long as the total is right who cares?

DC_flyer Jun 17, 2000 8:49 am

Has anybody heard anything regarding the codes inside the Kellogg boxes? I've been saving these things for several months now. The Kellogg website didn't have anything on this.

Also, go to the Kellogg website and look at the AAdvantage promotion. They have a questionnaire you can fill out for a change to win FF miles in a weekly drawing.

FlyAAway Jun 17, 2000 10:42 am

DC_flyer

Thank you for the heads up on the Kellogg's website FF mile contest.

You reduced your chances of winning all for us.

I pay homage.

TEXAS YANKEE: Sorry for the late reply, but I've been away from the board for a few days. In the Austin area I've found the cornflakes at the HEB store on RR620. Come take in an Express game, buy some flakes, make a day out of it!

dgordon Jun 17, 2000 3:55 pm

FYI Jewel in the Chicago area has cornflakes on sale for $1.50 (18 oz size) with plenty of AA packaging.

FYI: HEB Pantry in Houston (at least the one on Wirt Rd.) has plenty of 12 oz. Corn flakes with AA promotion for $2.49.
