Oneworld/Star Alliance bonuses
Hi all
I have noticed that Oneworld has a 100,000 mile/point bonus available for flying 5 Oneworld airlines.
I have a few questions about these sorts of bonuses:
1. Has Star Alliance matched Oneworld's offer?
2. Is this the first time that Oneworld has had this sort of promotion?
3. Is this Oneworld promotion likely to occur again around the same time or at some other time next year?
4. When you fly on a Oneworld ticket round the world can you claim mileage for one segment on one FF program and then mileage in another FF program in the next segement?
If this does occur again next year I'd be interested to buy one of Oneworld's RTW fares ($A2500) and rack up the miles.
Finally I have one last question concerning the use of these RTW tickets offered by Oneworld or Star Alliance.
American fly from the US as a codeshare with Qantas and then have domestic codeshares within Australia for connections. Can an Australian using a Oneworld ticket book the Melbourne to Sydney leg as an American Airlines trip without aqctually travelling across the pacific. Similar things could be done for Britich Airways connections within Australia.
cheers Peter

ffhound,
Check out the Oneworld topic below for multiple threads over the past few weeks on this offer. That should answer most of your questions, except for the Star Alliance question. I don't think Star matched oneworld, but someone in the Star topic is sure to know. Good luck, and start planning soon (you've already lost 6 days!).

under STAR you find everything you want to know. Here just very brief: no matching of the current one-world-offer, but it seems that a dicounted eco-rtw-Star-rtw offer (StarLITE) is just on it's way to be offered.
The last StarAlliance bonus promotion I know was running jan-feb-99 ONLY by LH: the more different Star-carriers (no code-shares) you did fly during that period and got credited to your LH-miles&more-account, the higher your bonus (fly them all = 50'000 miles bonus). UA had a similar promotion running late 98.
With Star rtw-fares, you can (and I often do) enter different ff-programs for each segment for which you get a different boarding-pass. Two years ago, in late 97, UA and LH did run their first StarAlliance-promotions simultanly, and the bonus for riding all partners then was higher (100'000 miles). With one rtw-StarAlliance-ticket (my very first one) I did then 2 segments with each carrier (and per carrier one segment creditet to UA, the second one to LH) and I made a total of 200'000 bonus miles plus the actual flight-miles and status-bonus.

Thanks all
Its a bit late for me to rustle up the cash to take advantage of this current offer but it seems likely that similar offers will be around next year. I shall definently be putting some cash aside to use for next year.
Thanks again
cheers peter

It seems that these offers are made to "introduce" people to an alliance. Star Alliance did this relatively near their inception and I believe the current oneworld bonus is the first one offered by them. Therefore, I think it is more likely that the new potential alliances will offer bonuses for flying many or all of their members rather than the "old" alliances doing it again unless of course to match them. For example, Wings with KL, NW, CO, AL, Malaysian?, HP?, VS? and Alaskan?. Or "Nameless Alliance" with DL, AF, AM, South African???, SQ???super high hope and BD???. Of course some of the members listed above are pure speculation or just high hopes on my part, but I hope you get the jist.
However, with all that said, I know 100,000 odd miles would be a lot better for you in the Star or oneworld since they're probably going to be the only alliances that have members down in your neck of the woods - Ansett, Air NZ and Qantas.
