You should still be able to call in and do it for your personal card. They took it off the website a few months ago.

Apparently it is because I closed my personal card,

I don't wan't to borrow anything,
but had not noticed this distinction. @:-)
I did an advance on my AmEx Business Gold Rewards account just last month. Advance and award (xfer to BA) both done on the phone in one conversation, lasted 5 minutes. Very simple.

Aha ! They just stopped making it obvious,
but can be done by calling in. Goood to know.

I hate it when they take away online services.

Priority Club did accidentally. Due to a mistaken promo last year they deposited 60,000 miles in numerous people's accounts who hadn't earned them. They took them back but allowed people to have a negative balance if they'd already cashed them out. I think I owe them something like 41,000 points

My option of borrowing 15k from Amex also disappeared. I still have the business card, no personal cards.

Membership Rewards Points Advance feature is no longer offered online, only by telephone and (to repeat) only in the process of redemption. One cannot advance points and store them in a MR account. First reported in June 2011. Ample discussion here:
