Delta May Buy American Airlines - What Happens to My Miles?

For those of you who haven't heard, Delta has apparently engaged with talks with Blackstone about a possible purchase of American Airlines.

If this deal should go through, what would happen to my miles with AA? Would AA switch out of OneWorld to SkyTeam (and if so, who would be the US anchor for that alliance)?

On other news, there is also speculation that US Airways is interested in AA. What happens there?

Any thoughts on this matter are appreciated.

+1

In the extremely unlikely event that it did, AA and DL miles would be combined (as CO/UA will be, and before that DL/NW, AA/TW, US/PSA, etc.)

That would make your AA miles less valuable if the DL program is the survivor, as skypesos saver award inventory is far lower than AA award inventory.

in the past, the mi have been xfered to the new program....in this case, they would become sky pesos....happened to us several times....

best bet would be us air....as makes no sense....ua/co or dl would be too big...

What happens to the Biscoff? How will this impact my cat? I want to fly my grandmother to.visit us in Zimbabwe on 2018, how will this merger impact her ability to get a vegetarian diabetic meal on the new DL/AA?

Lol, oh boy!

On the real though - I really hope both airlines stay separate. Last thing I want is fewer options for award redemption.

A pretty good size thread already in the AAdvantage forum.

Not sure if they have thoroughly sorted out the possible biscoff scenarios. Some good opinions about possible partners though.

AA and US I can believe, AA and DL is not going to happen. Doesn't the government have to approve airline's purchasing other airlines? Or is that just for mergers? I doubt the federal government would allow one super huge mega carrier in AA/DL.

I imagine the government would object to this. DL and AA are too big to merge.

Even if DL spun off the redundancies, the new airline would be pretty crippled in trying to compete with the rest of the market, so unless DL wants to take on all of AA's debt obligations, it's unlikely the creditors would be pleased that they're getting the short end of the bargain
