I wrote a column for InsideFlyer at the beginning of 2011 for a comparison of hotel program point value in terms of hotel spend needed for top hotel category rewards.
Hotel programs are actually quite similar with SPG being the main outlier at high-end hotels.

Hilton must be a in a league of shame on its own. In which other chain can you find amusing language like this?:
October 1 - I have enough points to book 6 nights in Bora Bora.
October 3, same room - "You will need to purchase 826,764 points for $19,842.34".
That is on the top of the 225,000 points I already have (equivalent of about 130K AA miles in conversion rates).
So 130,000 AA miles + $20,000 in cash will get you REWARD room that would otherwise cost you $4,000. Some reward indeed!
