How do 'Codeshares', 'metal' and 'operated by' - affect earned miles?

Hi,

I am currently trying to develop an all singing all dancing spreadsheet and would like to know a bit more about codeshare flights, the relevance of airline 'metal' and how it effects different FF programs.

When I book flights, I would usually go to BA.com book a BA flight and fly on it - dead easy and straight forward. However I realise things can get a lot more complicated than that.

For example I searched today for a flight from LHR to JFK.

BA website:
08.30 departing -BA0117 operated by BA
12.15 departing - BA1516 operated by AA

AA website:
08.30 departing -AA 6138 operated by BA
12.15 departing - AA 101 operated by AA

Now these are clearly the same flight but depending on which website you use, you get a different flight number.

My question is how does this effect the miles / points I can claim if I am
a) a BAEC member
b) AAdvantage member
c) Another airline partner to BA (for example CX)
d) Another airline partner to AA (for example Etihad)

I'd appreciate if someone could explain the differences and how it effect mileage earning for these for examples.

Cheers
Andrew

I'm not really familiar with OneWorld, but looking at AA's website, it looks like they grant miles based on the marketing carrier's flight number. If AA sells you the flight with the AA number (regardless of whether it's a BA-operated or AA-operated flight), you'll earn miles per AA's chart. If you book the flight with the BA number, you'll earn according to the BA chart.

I'm not sure what it would look like if you were in BAEC, Ethiad, or CX. That's going to take some researching on your part.

Generally speaking, though, the big three alliances have aligned their policies. I know for Skyteam, miles earned is based on the marketing carrier. For Star Alliance, miles earned is based on the operating carrier, regardless of the marketing carrier. I would guess (but I can't guarantee) that OneWorld grants miles based on marketing carrier, based on AA's system. And do be aware that outside of the alliances, codeshare and frequent flier partners can have all sorts of earning charts--it won't necessarily be the same for each partner.

Hope this gives you a start.

As this concerns mileage earning, rather than a "travel" topic, please follow the thread to the MilesBuzz forum. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TravelBuzz.

what is a singing & dancing spread sheet?.....

fare codes get involved in the mi earning when crediting to a ff acct when flying on a partner metal & flight #.....

an example would be flying on an ib or lan flight # & using aa mi #....for some fares you get 30% credit.....on cathay pacific, you can get zero ......

If you're looking for a general answer, the answer is "it depends."
Nearly every carrier spells out their policy in detail on their website.
Look to the carrier who you would like to credit miles to.

For example:
Delta: For Delta "marketed" (i.e., has a Delta code or booked on DL.com) http://www.delta.com/skymiles/ways_t...elta/index.jsp
For non-codeshared flights: http://skymilesoffers.delta.com/airline_partners.php

American: For AA coded flights http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/ea...s/american.jsp
For other flights: http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/ea...lines/main.jsp

etc.
