Which CC to apply for newbie?

I'm hoping to sign up for a CC to earn miles for my Toronto to Paris trip in Jan 2012. Any advice which to go with?

If you haven't got one already, I would say go for the Citi AA card:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...-up-bonus.html

Best sign-up bonus I am aware of at the moment and the timing of your desired trip is during AA's off-peak time so it will only require 40K miles and a relatively low amount of taxes and fees.

Note that I am assuming economy class. Other options may be better if looking for J/F ie AMEX MR transferred to ANA and redeemed on AC.

Don't forgot to apply for both the personal AA Visa and AMEX cards at the same time so that you can get 150,000 AA miles.

This is the best current credit card deal available!

+1 on the Citi AA cards. Do apply for both at same time.. don't make the same mistake I made...

Also keep an eye out on the boards next few days... rumors are for 2 new cards to come out any day now...

When I click the link in the AA 75K post, it looks like Citi is only offering 30k miles after a 750 spend in the first four months. Am I missing something?

Another Method

I've heard that they are still honoring the 75,000 through that link, but that is still iffy. I've also heard other people applying for the card over the phone using this number. Confirm with the CSR before going through with the application: 1-800-408-4954.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is also a great card to get. Also watch for 50,000 Chase card for Continental, and hopefully we will get a new Starwood (Sheraton, Westin, etc) card really soon that will be awesome.

Best of luck.

You are wrong to categorize the 75k Citi offers as "iffy". They are definitely alive and working. Just make sure you follow the guidelines set out in the first 2 posts of that thread and you will be fine. 75k AA Citi Card

Hyatt card so you can get two nights at the Park Hyatt Vendome, comes with $75 fee which is not waived. Or Chase Sapphire which gives you 50k points after $3k in spend, first year fee is waived. Also note, these cards do not charge foreign transaction fees.

I have a related question as a relative-noob...I got four cards earlier this year in quick succession and I assume I need to cool my heels for some time (60? days?) before applying for any new offers without getting auto-dinged. With two new offers supposedly in the works, is it prudent to hold off until the time has passed and I won't get denied for too many applications for credit in X period?

Thanks for all your replies! I was looking into the AA cards and the 75k is only for US residents? I'm from Canada. Works as well? Or do I just get 30k? Sorry, I'm really a noob :/

I think so because it requires a US social security number, given only to people who work/reside in the US. Give them a call and see what they say...

And on a side note, I only applied for the citibusiness. If I cancel my personal citi Amex can I do the trick for 150k??? I'm only planning to apply next year though...

So.. Any of those on the forum Canadians can apply to get the same amount of miles? They seem to offer us less, haha

woo hoo! my first flyertalk success story (other than the BA Chase 100k, which was truly just ridiculous):

I applied for the Citi AA Visa and was approved! Just need the $4,000 spend in 6 months to hit the 75K. Still waiting on the approval (or denial) for the Citi AA Amex card.

Thanks a lot for all of the help, everyone.

You probably should look into these threads on Canadian offers and pick the brains of your fellow countrymen:

Any Credit Card Bonuses (miles) Currently Availale for Canadian Citizens?

Canadian eh

Generally speaking, non-US based FTers don't get as generous cc bonus offers as US residents. That sucks but we learn to live with it.

Good luck and welcome to FT!

What would help is if you tell us what airline you are looking to book with?
