Question about multiple chase cards

Just applied for my first Chase card (Sapphire Preferred) and got instant approval. Then, I logged into my United account and saw the 50k miles offer from Chase, so I figured I should go for it and applied online. Got the "you will hear back soon" message, so I am assuming a deny.

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances before actually receiving the letter in the mail (said 30 days to hear back)? Is there a number to call where I can see if they'll spread the credit limit between the two cards?

Is it normal to get rejected on the 2nd card since I applied for both back to back?

Yes it is normal to get rejected on the 2nd application.

The consensus is a buffer of 30 days btwn Chase app's.

Would calling to spread the credit limit help any, or should I just reapply in a month or two for the United card?

My advice is to wait for their rejection letter to come in. It should have a date on it by which you can apply for reconsideration. Wait until 32-33 days have passed from when you were approved for the Sapphire card, then call and ask for reconsideration.

Yes, wait for denial letter then call and ask for reconsideration.

There are already numerous threads on this subject here and on the Other Credit Card Programs forum so I'll close this one.
