I need to get another 52000 United Miles to fly my husband back to Singapore with my son & I.

Newbie question :- We are planning to make some big purchases for the house fairly soon around $9500...I was thinking if we apply for a cc that has some miles that we can earn...which credit card will give me the best miles to get to the 52000 miles that we need? I need to get him a United ticket as my son & I already have our ticket purchased. We are travelling only in Nov 2011.

Your best bet right now would probably be the chase sapphire card. They are offering a 50,000 point bonus after spending $3,000. You'll get points for the spending too, so for a $3,000 spend, you'd get 53,000 points. These points can be transferred to Continental at a 1:1 ratio, so that would get you 53,000 Continental miles. Once you have those, you can transfer them directly to United.

If you applied right now, you're probably looking at a minimum of 6 weeks to get the points -- you'll need to do the spend and then wait for that month's statement to close. Here's the link.

To the OP, note that Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to CO, which can then be transferred to UA.

Not trying to sound dumb...but how do you do the transfer the Ultimate points to CO Miles coz I read a couple of threads about it. I have the Chase Freedom and do have some Ultimate points. I checked the Ultimate points website and do not see any option to transfer the points to CO miles...and then how do you transfer the CO miles to UA miles?

PREFERRED card will allow transfer to airlines and hotel(s). Regular sapph will not.

Given that you're about to spend $9500 and assuming your family's credit is good, I would not say that any one card might be necessary. You might consider a combination of a UA and/or CO Chase card (only giving 30,000 miles right now although there is a thread on a targeted CO business card offer for 50K--the big advantage here is only a first purchase is required plus adding an authorized user--your husband--to the account; if you take the CO card, you can transfer directly into United's program), a Chase Sapphire Preferred card with a 50K bonus in Chase's Ultimate Rewards program (these points are directly transferable to the CO FF program at a 1:1 ratio; you could then transfer miles to the UA program), and an Amex Preferred Rewards Gold (similar to the Chase program except it's titled Membership Rewards; similar direct transfer ratio to CO and same transfer to UA).

You and your husband might each be able to qualify for one of these cards, thus doubling the bonus miles earned. Before applying for any cards, I'd look carefully at the details of each card to see the spending requirements so that you could spread your $9500 to get the maximum number of miles. Plus, keep in mind that while some transfers are relatively quick, others are slower so you'll want to start the process of transferring as soon as possible so that you can try to arrange your travel. And since at some times and on some routes, award availability can be sparse, you'll want to have your acquired miles in place ASAP so that you can book your travel for November.

My husband has a better credit than I do. He pays off his everytime to the zero. I am the straddler to my credit due to some bad "family experience". Anyhoo...I will def pass along the info to my husband.

You might be lowering your husbands credit rating by doing this but you can also have your husband open a joint card where your social is added and have him manage it this will result in an increase in your credit score.
