can anyone who participated in one of these promotions tell me if thats how long it took ?

I got the first half of the AA miles within the first month of having funded the account, and the second half about six months after that.

Are you talking about the new account promo, or the additional transfer promo?

Does anyone know if taking advantage of these offers triggers the issuance of a 1099 form from TD Ameritrade?

I've never received one for these brokerage account bonus offers. It's not an interest or dividend payment, nor is it a prize. It's simply a benefit you receive for opening an account with certain minimums, and that's not income to you.

In some instances yes they have sent 1099's. I can't recall the "value" cutoff. Since the IRS doesn't consider miles income I think miles are valued at $0.00 while physical items (Golf Clubs, etc) are valued at MSRP and gift cards at face value.

Interesting. Fidelity went up to 50K miles for $100K deposit.

May we all be the beneficiaries of this competition!

Unfortunately for me, I've done accounts at both TD Ameritrade and Fidelity, for both myself and my wife. Maybe some other brokerage will enter the ring.

I have an older TD Ameritrade account that is a joint with right of survivorship account with my husband and I. Are your accounts individial accounts or JROS? I am wondering what happens if my husband tries to open an individual account if I am the primary on the old account, particularly since we never received a miles bonus for our ancient account. any thoughts?

I don't really know. My wife and I each had individual accounts, and I had to add her to mine for this transfer since the securities I transferred were in a joint account.

But in your situation, I just don't know.

Hold on there -- the IRS has never taken a blanket position that miles are not considered income. What it has done is say essentially that miles earned on business trips need not be reported as employee compensation (i.e., no FICA tax and no income tax for employee).

If a bank were to pay you miles instead of cash as interest on a CD, that would certainly be reportable interest income. Account opening bonuses, however, are not like interest. You can invest the money however you want in your account. It's a non-taxable enticement to do business with them.

Correct right up until the last sentence.

It's (probably) not interest, therefore no 1099-INT is required. That doesn't have any bearing on whether it's taxable. There's no sound reason for holding it's not taxable (at least by reducing your basis allocated to whatever you buy in your account, resulting in income when you sell).

dhuey Sep 29, 2010 5:17 pm

I wasn't suggesting that because it's not interest, it is thus not taxable income. Interest is however the only category of taxable income anywhere close here. This is not compensation for services, interest, dividends, a prize, rent, royalties or any other form of taxable compensation.
