Targeted American Express 50k offer

My first new thread :D

Fresh out of my mail box - what appears to be a targeted offer from American Express. It is their Premier Rewards Gold Card; $175 annual fee (waived first year - like I would keep it over a year and pay;)); spend $500 by May 31 and get 50k Membership Rewards points. It seems that the points turn into miles if you so desire for a whopping $0.0006 per point or all of $30 for 50k miles.

Question is: Does anybody have experience with this card/offer? My gut says to take it and run! Fellow FT'ers please convince me either way.

Thank you.

Definitely apply. How do I go about getting offers like this?

rajuabju Mar 30, 2010 6:42 pm

Wow thats a great offer, much better than the 10k/15k offers from a while back that I used.

Welcome to Flyertalk.

The standard activation offer is 10,000 Membership Rewards points, but there is also a 15,000 point offer. These offers also includes an additional 15,000 points after spending $30,000 and there are bonus points when spending on airfare, gasoline and groceries.

Extensive discussion of the card here:

The redemption fee mentioned in the offer applies only if you transfer to a USA based airline. Transfers to other airlines are free:

OMG, I've had 3 invitations and have neglected to do my duty as a faithful mileage-chasing FTer. Does anyone know what key criteria they look for in the app? I really want to get it.

IIRC, the anecdotal consensus is that you can't have more than three credit cards with Amex to be approved for another card. Notice the difference between credit and charge cards: PR Gold must be paid off every month, as a charge card, vs. products like Starwood and Hilton cards, where you can carry a balance.

Definitely let us know what happens. Oh, and Surface Interval - love that username. ;)

This offer is one of the best and is targeted to new users.
My son got his, and got 50k MR for 1k$ spend.
I read the fine print wrong and put another 9k without realizing that it was not needed.

I got this offer last summer for 1K spend. I never had an AMEX before. Definitely do it. Note that if you cancel your card, then the MR points are forfeited, so transfer them before you cancel.

Wow! Any way to get on the 'target' list? Is there an offer code? Has anyone not targeted been able to apply for the 50k award offer. The best offer I could find otherwise was 15k for this card.

I've had the 50K offer - been a couple years. Hoping my wife gets one eventually. Would have been nice to have it this winter to combine with the BA promo and the Chase miles!

Incidentally, transferring to an non-American airline generally means there's no fee for the transfer. Unless that rule changed?

This is an incredible offer. I wish I could get one.

After further review of the fine print - "For each conversion of points into the Frequent Flyer program of a U.S. airline, a fee of $0.0006 per point, with a maximum of $99, will be charged to your Card account."

The FT consensus points to a great deal - even better that I thought with the unAmerican bit. Game on!

I got this offer a couple of months ago and jumped on it.

Data points: The offer came about a month after I accepted a 20k *points for $500 spend offer for the *wood Amex. The *wood card was my first Amex. Approved with credit scores in the low to mid 700s.

Good luck!

I knew I should have waited. I applied last week and was approved. It was the 15k promo. I have not received my card yet. I wonder if I called them to ask about it before I activated my card if they would allow me to fall under this promo.

I have received this before, and so have several family members. I believe its targeted to people with no AMEX relationship, although I did have a corporate card at the time.
