Targeted American Express 50k offer

My first new thread :D

Fresh out of my mail box - what appears to be a targeted offer from American Express. It is their Premier Rewards Gold Card; $175 annual fee (waived first year - like I would keep it over a year and pay;)); spend $500 by May 31 and get 50k Membership Rewards points. It seems that the points turn into miles if you so desire for a whopping $0.0006 per point or all of $30 for 50k miles.

Question is: Does anybody have experience with this card/offer? My gut says to take it and run! Fellow FT'ers please convince me either way.

Thank you.

mosu84 Mar 30, 2010 6:08 pm

Definitely apply. How do I go about getting offers like this?

rajuabju Mar 30, 2010 6:42 pm

Wow thats a great offer, much better than the 10k/15k offers from a while back that I used.

mia Mar 30, 2010 6:52 pm

Welcome to Flyertalk.

The standard activation offer is 10,000 Membership Rewards points, but there is also a 15,000 point offer. These offers also includes an additional 15,000 points after spending $30,000 and there are bonus points when spending on airfare, gasoline and groceries.

Extensive discussion of the card here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...old-card.html?

The redemption fee mentioned in the offer applies only if you transfer to a USA based airline. Transfers to other airlines are free:

ChaseTheMiles Mar 30, 2010 6:55 pm

OMG, I've had 3 invitations and have neglected to do my duty as a faithful mileage-chasing FTer. Does anyone know what key criteria they look for in the app? I really want to get it.

divemistressofthedark Mar 30, 2010 8:21 pm

IIRC, the anecdotal consensus is that you can't have more than three credit cards with Amex to be approved for another card. Notice the difference between credit and charge cards: PR Gold must be paid off every month, as a charge card, vs. products like Starwood and Hilton cards, where you can carry a balance.

Definitely let us know what happens. Oh, and Surface Interval - love that username. ;)

This offer is one of the best and is targeted to new users.
My son got his, and got 50k MR for 1k$ spend.
I read the fine print wrong and put another 9k without realizing that it was not needed.

BlueDog Mar 30, 2010 9:04 pm

I got this offer last summer for 1K spend. I never had an AMEX before. Definitely do it. Note that if you cancel your card, then the MR points are forfeited, so transfer them before you cancel.

Wow! Any way to get on the 'target' list? Is there an offer code? Has anyone not targeted been able to apply for the 50k award offer. The best offer I could find otherwise was 15k for this card.

ArizonaGuy Mar 31, 2010 12:04 am

I've had the 50K offer - been a couple years. Hoping my wife gets one eventually. Would have been nice to have it this winter to combine with the BA promo and the Chase miles!

Incidentally, transferring to an non-American airline generally means there's no fee for the transfer. Unless that rule changed?

nydad Mar 31, 2010 2:11 am

This is an incredible offer. I wish I could get one.

After further review of the fine print - "For each conversion of points into the Frequent Flyer program of a U.S. airline, a fee of $0.0006 per point, with a maximum of $99, will be charged to your Card account."

The FT consensus points to a great deal - even better that I thought with the unAmerican bit. Game on!

andyandy Mar 31, 2010 7:21 am

I got this offer a couple of months ago and jumped on it.

Data points: The offer came about a month after I accepted a 20k *points for $500 spend offer for the *wood Amex. The *wood card was my first Amex. Approved with credit scores in the low to mid 700s.

Good luck!

sycotik Mar 31, 2010 8:02 am

I knew I should have waited. I applied last week and was approved. It was the 15k promo. I have not received my card yet. I wonder if I called them to ask about it before I activated my card if they would allow me to fall under this promo.

doctor15 Mar 31, 2010 8:08 am

I have received this before, and so have several family members. I believe its targeted to people with no AMEX relationship, although I did have a corporate card at the time.

Will someone post offer details and let us "nontargeted" folks to try in the action?

Exactly. Convert to AC, BA or MX. Works nicely!

allanl Mar 31, 2010 10:36 am

I got the 50k mileage offer in the mail in January for the Amex Gold Delta Skymiles card, but it required me to spend $3,000 within 3 months. The miles posted almost immediately after I hit my spending target.

Although the same number of points as the Premier Rewards card, the annual fee for this one is only $85, also waived for the first year.

I don't see a way to get this offer on their website. As far as why I was targeted, I didn't have a current relationship with Amex, but did have a closed corporate account.

lenny851 Mar 31, 2010 10:40 am

I did this offer it was great. Transfer it to CO and it put me and the wife just over the miles we needed to for my roundtrip to china

dinosims Mar 31, 2010 4:59 pm

I got this offer last year for the Rewards Plus Gold Card. 50k MR points after $500 spend. I had had the B6 Amex for several years prior, but I guess they wanted more use on an Amex than I was giving them. I cancelled that card before the annual fee was due, but not before opening a Premier Rewards GC with a 15k bonus after $1k spend.

Note of caution from the wise through experience - read the fine print. If you have another AMEX card, they will not waive the fee. Which makes one wonder why they target current AMEX card holders

I called the 800 number but she had no clue as to what generated the offer or where to find it....so anyone with specific info on how to get this offer or what it says in the offer please post!!!

The Bonus ID is 3767. I suspect that will not amount to much. If you do get through to a freindly sort, please share you experience!

Interesting data point: my card came today, but had no mention of the 50K offer  I called and verified before activating and was told "yes, you are absolutely going to get the 50K". We'll see  Heck, it is only $500 that I would spend anyway . . .

I tried in vain to get Mrs Surface Interval signed up - to no avail. The pat line is: "If you do not have the offer (16 digit RSVP code) in your name we cannot give it to you". I tried two different times and got the same response.

Wow, awesome idea. Has anyone else been able to do this? It almost makes me want to apply for the 15k offer and try to weasel my way into a 50k bonus, but I don't really want the inquiry unless I know I can get the 50.

vrbaba Apr 6, 2010 1:41 pm

I got this offer, but for $1k spend or something, in Dec 2008. 50k points were posted on the first billing cycle. So, I would not worry at all if I were you.

Wish it was easier. Thoughts, others?

The telephone is 19th century technology, largely obsolete for business transactions. In my experience it is much better to write to American Express using the secure messaging facility on the website. Then you can print and save their confirmation. Email creates accountability.

Just got the card in the mail and was pleasantly surprised as the card show member since 01. Now, I haven't had an AMEX since, oh, about 01 and had my first one back in 90. Not sure of the significance of the Member since date (yeah, yeah do a search, but sine I am an ORIGINAL MEMBER - I am sure I can getway with these little transgressions) - but in any event I am pleased (not sure why).^

Phaenon Apr 17, 2010 6:00 pm

someone please explain how to apply for this card? I have the Opt-out thing so i don't get credit offers.

jamflyer, the member since date is what AmEx usually reports as the open date to the various credit reporting agencies for your new card.

So even though it is a new account with no payment history, AmEx reports it as if it is a 9 year old account. Doing so is an indirect benefit for your credit report since it improves the average age of your accounts (vs. reporting it as an account opened in 2010).

Anyone can apply using the information mentioned in post #4 of this thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/13680495-post4.html

However, to obtain the 50,000 point bonus rather than the standard offers you need to have been invited. You can try the Find out which Special Card offers you may be pre-selected for tool located here:

I took advantage of this offer twice (at the same time - one personal, one business) and ended up with 100k member rewards and no annual fees for the first year. I used the member rewards to pay for airline tickets via "pay with points". The two tickets were open jaw IAD-CPH & ZRH-IAD cost appx. $1200 and the first $1000 was covered by my membership rewards. Basically, I spent $200 on those two tickets to Europe and then canceled the cards before I had to pay the annual fee. It's a great offer!! Jump on it!!

there are a lot better uses for 100K membership rewards points IMO, but you did get the use out of it as was most relevant to you.

You spent it on 2 one-ways - 50k each? Judging from the cost, in COACH? If you had to, you had to, but as said above, there is much more value to those 100k reward points.

I just signed up for this card. The offer says that the fee was waived, yet I have another Amex card (delta).

This is what the offer states.

"Also pay no annual fee the first year, a savings of $175.^3"

"^3 The annual fee for the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express will be waived for the first year. Then the annual fee with...(talks about future years)"

Does your offer states something else about charging for the first year if you have another card?
