This perfectly describes my view as a 100% self-funded leisure traveler.

I only have anecdotal evidence, but I'd been watching an LAX-BOM fare for January for a few months. Booked on SQ, but been looking at CX fares to help with ExPlat qualification in 2019. I had been seeing ~$3,500 fares in J on CX, and now with the discount code they're...$4,500. I haven looked for a few weeks, but I don't see these as a real bargain IMHO.

But the PE deal out of SFO seems really solid.

Welp, looks like I'm going for EXP in 2019... Booked 1 PE trip so far. Looking forward to the A350-1000 and the 3-class 777-300ER. Plan on booking a second before the sale ends. For what it's worth. I did 3 Cathay PE flights last year as a OW Emerald with no upgrade in sight on either. PE booked full on all 3 flights.

Is there anyway to use this promo code with a stopover? The promotion says valid on roundtrip only.and I do not see anywhere to enter a promo code on multi-city / stopover booking. Also, the roundtrip search results are not quite as comprehensive as everything available on Google flights. If anyone has any tricks to share for RT Cathay bookings that would be much appreciated.

Ya know that LAX-BKK for $1035 is just about as good as that SFO-HKG. 24,927EQM, $3324EQD works out to 3.2EQD per dollar spent. Not the 3.5EQD per dollar as it is on that SFO-HKG, but for us so cal people the cost of positioning might make BKK a better deal.
Does CX allow for stopovers on these fares?

Ymmv, but in my experience, the CX Op-Up gravy train has ended along with CX really tightening up last minute award availability.
$773 for PE midweek (or $873 on weekend dates) is still an solid deal. Just don't have unrealistic expectations of Op-Ups. Still with 40" pitch/recline and wider seats with dedicated armrests, this is an better than domestic F way of flying across pacific. Beats the new CX 10 across 777 economy seats by a long shot not to mention PE mileage earning on Aadvantage.

It seems Cathay has not been overselling economy/prem econ as much or maybe they revised their Op-up priority in recent years. Back when I regularly flew LAX-HKG-DXB, I averaged 50% op-up rate as AA EP/OW Emerald 2014-2016 over about 20 flights from PE to J. Then starting in 2017 my Op-Up rate went down toilet, only got 1 Op-Up PE to J out of 17 flights in long haul Cathay.
