Not all airlines use historical fares to reprice partially used tickets.

Even if you dispute charges the bank may not always decide in your favor, airlines/OTAs have even more time/resources to counter-dispute when necessary.

true. i would want to see a copy of fare rule and if they refuse to change despite the rule allows it, i would do a dispute. if they rule said it wasnt changeable, i would accept the fate.

i got amex to pay for my ET ticket bkk add yyz add bkk after they refused to let me change the inbound (i flew outbound and miles credited to A3) and amex paid me the entire ticket back.

I looked at some of their other J basis fares, and historical pricing would be used on a partially used ticket. The catch here, as others have commented, is that a published fare basis doesn't exist for our tickets, so HX can probably do as it pleases.

i am not sure if HX can really do as they please. they sell a fare via their website and other channels. if they sell a fare, the fare must exist, otherwise, they wouldnt sell it.
if they dont honor it, it is fine. if they do honor it, they cant impose arbitrary condition to the fare.
they sold the the same fare in their own channel, it is not difficult to see that it is just a normal fare -- at a lower price. that is the way I see it.

but if they DO have a fare attached to it at the time of purchase that is not changeable and re-price, i would accept it and move on.

HX's position is that the historic fare was supposed to book in economy class and was booked in business by mistake. They are happy to honor changes but then you travel in economy.

I have already tried this - by phone, Twitter and email multiple times.

Let us know if anyone succeeds.

Even for an economy fare, this would have been a pretty good deal, especially given that it's mostly on A350s.

Yes, the economy fare rule is $200 change fee. They gave me 2 options. Travel in economy for $200 change fee or in business class for an add collect of $2k. They say that there is no historic fare for this price in business It was an economy fare that was booked in business by mistake.

Dispute with whom? I escalated it and someone called me from HKG to explain. I also tried to change it at the ticket counter in HKG. No success. If I had pushed it, maybe I could have gotten a date change but I wanted to fly back from a different city.

BTW, this is exactly what happened with the Myanmar fares of a few years ago.

dispute with credit card company and see what they say.

the argument is that you book a business class fare round trip, it allows a change fee for 200 and they refuse.

I am sure Amex will simply return the entire amount of the ticket. But it still leaves me without a flight to get back.

So, I just adapted to the circumstances.

I am not going to do a charge back since HX did the honorable thing by honoring the mistake fare. It's a great deal even with no changes
