I guess it comes down to one's definition of "safe".

I've stumbled around Shanghai at 4am and felt very safe (I think...). I've grabbed a teenagers hand in my pocket reaching for my iPhone on an EZE metro. I got a parasite from visiting South Africa (had a Braai with a "friend of a friend"). No lie, my digestive system was not better for over a month. I got wicked food poisoning in Foz do Iguazu in Brazil (worth it).

Honestly? I've had more crimes committed against me while at home, in the US.

I realize not everyone likes to live on the edge.. but that's where the best views are.

Best of luck finding a solid, safe MR. Let us know if you end up with one.

That's the point, I am doing a 2-day trip in a new culture on the other side of the world, I don't have time for parasites and food poisoning... It is bad enough managing the jetlag and the sleep issue from the inbound trip.

PEK = 100% safe. I feel way safer in PEK than I do in any other major worldwide city.

China for visitors is pretty safe crime-wise but not so safe in terms of food safety. Air pollution causes health problems for some people too.

what about terrorism or industrial action? A lot of the healthier cities suffer from these problems.

I always brush my teeth with bottled water in Beijing (and everywhere in China). In terms of personal safety in terms of crime, yes, it is much safer than most places in the US. But experience has taught me not to play dice with Chinese tap water.

In my life so far, I have lived and worked in 13 different cities in four different countries, but I don't do Disneyworld, I hear that stuff is for sophisticated Brits who come down to Orlando with charters...

I do not intend to be rude, but, do people actually do this? Do you also plug your eyes, ears and nose?

It is silly. They should just drink a lot of alcohol to kill all the bugs.
