Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:

$175 R/T to HKG or 7500 Avios
Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

Man... this is weird, I'm DM @ Delta and nothing on AA. It's like I've never flown before.

In the world of UA you earn PQM (elite qualifying miles) if you fly UA metal regardless of who sold the ticket or if it's marketed as another airline's codeshare. Reading American's website I can't find anything to the contrary, but not so according to flyer guide.

"Codeshare flights operated by AA but ticketed with a partner airline flight number are subject to partner earning rules."

If the flyer guide wiki is right, it's pretty clear that you won't earn EQM unless your ticket has an AA flight number, which mine definitely does not. You will still get the redeemable miles, it just won't help you qualify for elite status.

My receipt shows five columns, TRAVEL DATE, AIRLINE, DEPARTURE, ARRIVAL, OTHER NOTES. Under 'THER NOTES' each of my flights shows this:

Code:
Class ECONOMY
Seat Number CHECK-IN
REQUIRED
Baggage Allowance 2PC
Booking Status OK TO FLY
Fare Basis EHOT3MUS
Not Valid Before XX XXX
Not Valid After XX XXX
I should also note that while the Etihad receipt shows $0, that doesn't at all match what I was charged (still pending). The OTA receipt I have shows an "Airline Ticket Cost" of $229.90 plus a separate line for taxes and fees.

The Points Guy (TPG) is reporting that these fares were DESIGNED by Etihad and that Etihad even maintained communications on their social media regarding the success of fare buyers!

But with AA the operating carrier matters far less than the marketing carrier. You will earn RDM only and no bonus for elite status.

That... is not what that article says. It says that Etihad interacted with customers on social media. Those customers referred to "great prices," not to the mistake fare in particular. There is absolutely nothing from Etihad indicating these fares were "designed."

Sorry, but I see many generic answers by social media teams of companies that make you think they never read the original post. I don't think they have a clue what went on.

Fare has still not hit my AmEx.

Why should we trust anything TPG says? I would prefer to trust an expert rather than a businessman. He runs a for-profit website.

That twitter rep clearly doesn't know what they're talking about and is utterly misinformed.

I managed to get two tickets - one to Johannesburg for $338 in May. I was able to use the Etihad booking reference to log on to AA and choose my seats for the AA flights. My preferred status allowed me to choose MCE so seats are chosen for that!

I also had a ticket to the Seychelles - but as the ticket cost twice as much - and the hotels there are outrageous (as well as other incidental expenses), I think I am just going to cancel that ticket as it is for a five day stay. I don't think I want to be in the Seychelles for five days on my own.... if it were a two day stay, I would consider it a mileage run and be done with it.

Probably not a bad thing, as that person posted that twitter before noon yesterday, when the deal was probably still live.

Sorry to hear that as the Seychelles are one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.
