Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

I got an email today about being re-accommodated on the direct flights instead of transiting England. My flights are in late October.

Anyway, at the bottom of the email it said that if I have any trouble to give them a call and provided a link to their website:

http://www.test.etihad.com/about-us/...s/our-offices/

If you visit, it prompts you for a login to the Etihad VPN. They sent out an email with a link to internal-only resources!! (Actually, I'm surprised the website was smart enough to redirect me to a login page on their VPN appliance.) The valid URL is:

http://www.etihad.com/about-us/contact-us/our-offices/

Just take out the .test part of it and you're good to go. Thought I'd share because it's kind of hilarious.

40 minutes of hold music and the rep insists that I cannot be booked back into my original flight on AA "because it would cost too much money" but they could refund me if I wanted. :/

I'll HUCA, but I don't have time for a 40 minute hold before each attempt today. Jerks.

I worked once in a call center. People WILL make crap up for various reasons, whether it's pressure from above to keep costs down, to sweep a mistake under the rug, or just because the phone rep doesn't feel like talking to anyone right at that moment. The reason doesn't particularly matter, I did not get any official communication from Etihad about new and particular rules being applied to this flight, and others have clearly been able to revert back to their originally booked itineraries. On top of this, Etihad values my time so little as to understaff their helpdesk to the point of 40 minute wait times. (To be fair, all airlines do this, but it doesn't change the fact that they do not value my time in the way I expect most businesses to.) Also, they changed my flight time unilaterally by 6 hours.

Taken all together, yes, I think that the company is full of jerks.

Clearly my agent had been coached by a supervisor/mentor on what to say. Why? Because they sold me a ticket at a price that they later decided wasn't good enough. That actually is a post-purchase price increase, and just because my itinerary is less convenient for them does not permit them to change my itinerary. If a flight were cancelled, schedule changed, weather adversely impacted travel, or w/e, I would not care. But specifically referring to cost and explicitly stating that I "didn't pay enough" for the itinerary that I booked? That's a post-purchase price increase, and that, in my book, makes them jerks.

NOTE: You'll notice that I specifically avoided saying that *my rep* was a jerk, because she wasn't, at least not to me (that is, unless she was the one making everything up, but I seriously doubt that). It was the company, so probably a middle, or even low-level, manager making the decision that I "didn't pay enough." When referring to unknown person(s) at a company, I use the plural, hence jerks.

I hope that answers your question.

I see what you mean -- letting customers twist in the wind isn't great, nor are 40 minute hold times mid-day. Point taken.

I'll HUCA, but I don't have time for a 40 minute hold before each attempt today. Jerks.

I think most long time members of this board will be able to conclude very easily and quickly about whom that adjective should be applied.

In spite of some shortcomings about prompt email notifications, Etihad overall has been doing a good PR job on this fare where they are obviously losing money.

Their legal obligations are to take you to your booked destination before or within reasonable time of original arrival time. Unless you purchased and paid for a legal stopover, you are not entitled to any routing.

HUCA may work as Etihad has obliged many but they are certainly not "jerks" if they do not. On the other hand.....

# only stays on screen for 10-15 seconds so be ready

BTW - the # is a reference number and if the screen reverts back to the one where you put your confirmation #; just hit your back arrow on your browser and VOILA - it's there. But it's quick there too.

Usually two but all of 'em if it's SFO and it's your first time landing.

I believe that depends on:

1) Your legal theory of what you're purchasing.

2) Whether you believe an airline should be able to make significant schedule and routing changes PURELY for revenue reasons.

If I'd paid $2700 for a direct flight to Australia on AA, for example, does the airline have the right to change my routing and schedule because they NOW have customers willing to pay $5000 for my direct flight?

By your logic, they do. The company I work for, that might have paid for that ticket, may disagree.

I can't find the original citation, but the idea of post-purchase price increases, or reneging on deals being illegal goes back *almost* to the founding of the US. It was originally a farmer who had crops to sell, sold them to a stranger, and later found out that the prices had recently significantly increased at the market down the street. The stranger knew about the difference in prices but did not reveal this to the farmer. The courts sided with the stranger.

Airfare may be different, and I think we could reasonably disagree. However, I do believe that airlines are already given far too much leniency. Changing my schedule unilaterally, specifically and solely to attempt to increase the revenues, should be illegal, in my view. It is not clear to me whether it is legal or illegal and IANAL. In fact, I can find no precedent for such actions. The AA website, for example, does not seem to have a written policy about such situations (altering a customer's timing and routing for business reasons, rather than operational or weather reasons). I'm sure this has happened before, but I can't find where.

And in support of my argument that airlines should be left holding the baggage, so to speak, for having sold tickets, I'll offer that they *often* refer to their CoC's and policies when screwing customers. For example, I was recently told that my $250 return ticket was now going to cost ~$1450 because I'd been ill. The airline advised me that I should have purchased travel insurance. (In fact, I had it through my credit card, and am in the process of availing myself of it now.) Perhaps the airlines, who have sold me a ticket, need to invest in a "mistake fare" insurance of sorts. Or, at least hold the responsible entity liable for the error, as UA has recently repeatedly claimed that their fares were correctly filed in the recent ex-LHR debacle ("Great Dane") and one of their partners had a bug that could potentially have cost them a TON of money. Wouldn't it make sense for UA to flag down their partner and sue or otherwise extract concessions from THEM for having screwed up?

If airlines are going to hold me to the letter of their contract, I believe that they should be held just as well to the letter of the law (or regulations with the effect of law, in this case).

NOTE: Etihad does seem to mostly be handling this reasonably well, and if I preferred the direct flight, it would be awesome to have that option, even to be automatically rebooked onto it. However, Etihad shouldn't tell me that they're unable to book me back onto a connecting flight that I'd originally booked with a partner carrier specifically because I didn't pay for it (I DID). It's like begging me to write to the DoT. How am I supposed to know the difference between the recent fare sale MNL-AUH where one-way tickets were $12 inclusive of taxes and a $200 mistake fare (I actually paid almost double that, but it shouldn't be relevant what I paid).
