Online SDC doesn't work when more than two segments are left (unflown) in the direction you're currently going. In addition, the same fare class must be available on all new segments, A in our case. Are you sure the options were, in fact, available?
FWIW, I've done SDC online for the last inbound segment, ORD-BOS. It worked just like it does for any other itinerary.

Date change online?
I had changed the date for my return icn-sfo-bos on united.com earlier without any problem. I now tried to make another date change but keep on getting error message saying that I need to call UA.
did anyone experience this issue?

No, but my guess is that you can't change the travel date beyond one year from when it was originally ticketed.
