I live 12 miles from HPN, 27 from LGA, 36 from JFK, 51 from EWR, and 56 from SWF, so I have a fairly wide range of choices, but I only fly from EWR due to my CO affiliation. A flight would have to be significantly cheaper (Multiple hundreds of dollars...) for me to even consider anything but EWR.

Also once drove to IAD (~170 miles) to save $400 on a TATL.

Hey, we're neighbors! I'm 25 mins from PHF, but usually fly out of RIC (45 mins) for lower fares and more airline choices. We've done ORF a couple of times too.

IAD is our main TATL airport, but we've done BWI a couple of times for low fares, plus the parking situation there is awesome for a bigger city (although the Herndon Park N Ride works in a pinch for IAD) http://www.flyertalk.com/wink.gif

OOL is 5 minutes from me but is now only LCC for domestic so I drive 100 km (1 - 1 1/2 hours) to BNE to catch QF.

I once picked up a friend in CAE (150 mile drive) because her fare was a couple hundred cheaper. fortunately AVL no has much better service to many more cities.
I regularly drive to CLT for flights, once to GSP, once to ATL.

Luckily for me I live 35 minutes from both IAD (~25 miles away) and DCA (~20 miles away) and then 45 minutes from BWI (~40 miles away), so I have a bunch of airport options whether I want to fly United, which I usually try to do, or other airlines if it's either significantly cheaper or much more convenient. But as for airports I prefer to fly from IAD as much as possible.

I regularly fly out of IAH (30 min), AUS (2.5 hours), and SAT (2-2.5 hours). My personal record was a 9-hour drive to LBB for a $600 savings vs IAH even though the flight routed through IAH. Gotta love fare pricing structures...

I guess I am the first RDU post. I live 10 min from the airport using the backroads to RDU and would have to tell anyone buying my home that it is in the RDU flight zone. I'm fortunate RDU has WN, JetBlue and Airtran, along with all the majors. I only have had to rt drive to CLT to eliminate legs in order to get business award travel to asia that was capped at 5 legs each way and another time for an award to the caribbean with a undoable connection from RDU. I once flew in/out of GSO, but I know a lot of people from CAE, CLT, RIC that drive to RDU to save on fares.

I'm lucky too as I have SFO & OAK within fairly easy drive distances, with SFO as home port. I've thought about SJC or SAC when contemplating MR's, but other than a nebulous temptation, I stick to SFO & OAK...yes, even SJC is too far! Home ports with every carrier has definitely spoiled me.

No driving now that I live in NYC. It's such a shame though, that the airports are all extremely inconvenient for me to get to (esp. from the east side of Manhattan). In fact, driving to airports in the Bay Area or Inland Empire of California was so much more convenient and faster despite occasional traffic.

Unless things have changed massively since I lived there (and it's been long enough that they may have) - outside of rush hours, the cost and hassle of a cab ride to LGA from most of the East Side should be pretty low. The other two, not so much, although transit access to both JFK and EWR are both a lot better than they were 15 years ago.

45 minutes on a good day
90 minutes on not such good days

Live 20 mi from YVR (home airport)...have driven MULTIPLE times down to SEA (160 mi) to fly US domestic.

Done it for savings of $200/ticket but starting to reconsider. As easy as the drive is, I value my time quite a bit. (Or maybe I'm just getting lazier ;))

I take the bus to Philly (1.5-2hrs) for a savings of $200 (quite frequent) or more. Especially if I can route the return flight through NYC and ditch the 81 mile segment to PHL.

Early-Mid 80's. AUS to IAH. Cheap CO into fares. $16 IAH-JAX intro fares. Too bad I didn't have any clue about mileage runs. Did join CO freq flyer because it was free. :)

Late 80's-Early 90's. Lived near FAT. Extensive job interviewing at the time. Got prospective employer to pay mileage to go out of ONT because I had relative there. Employer save tons of $$ because I offer fly out on Sat for Monday interview. Win/win. Back in the segment promos in the early 90's. Of course, I flew DL awards out of FAT. ;)

1993 on. Whatever area Los Airport offers the best deal. Wife likes to fly out of SNA but the parking is expensive.

In 2002, drove from LA to San Diego to take advantage of $300 summer SAN-LGW fare. Nice. ^ Friend asked why did I drive to SD? To save $1000. ^
