Ok I don't have a car but I'd fly from any airport in Ireland and the U.K. if the deal is good enough! I regularly take deals from DUB or ORK, which are 3.5 and 2 busses respectively. I'd take a deal from BFS or BHD if it was good enough and I wasn't shelling out for an overnight, that's hard with TATLs though because they're morning departures. U.K. airports are fine too, as long as I can get a cheap FR flight to get there :)
STN / LGW / LTN / LHR / LCY transfers not a problem, the journey is the destination remember ;)

MCO and JAX are often worth the 60-90 minute drive from DAB to either save on the fare or get better routing. I like the lower parking costs and shorter security lines at DAB but when the savings are large enough, I do it.

I will drive 85 miles to MKE to save money if the trip length is short, and occasionally 135 miles to ORD, but the price difference has to be at least $120 for ORD and $80 for MKE. Buses run to both, so sometimes I take the buses if I have time. I don't drive to catch a non-stop, since I usually want to maximize EQM.

I drove 4.5 hours a couple of times to MSP when Icelandic was way cheaper to fly to OSL, but the drives back were really hard. I also drove to MSP to take advantage of a $120 MSP-LAX fare, but that was foolishness.

When I was living in CAE I would sometimes drive 75 minutes to CLT to save money. Parking was really cheap there too... $3 for economy and $6 for garage!

Now I'm back in DC paying $20 a day for the garage.

Same here, I don't own a car, so I usually walk the three blocks hop on the bus to SFO (25 min away). Otherwise, I can travel from OAK (45 min by BART and AirBART) or SJC (90 min away by Caltrain). I've driven to SMF (105 min away) for a trip to NRT on an AC fare a few years back.

CLL: 12 minutes
AUS: 1 hour, 50 min
IAH: 1 hour, 40 min

If the CLL price is within 100 bucks, I usually take it. However, that RARELY happens. Most often, I drive to AUS as those prices can be 200-300 less than CLL, and usually a few bucks cheaper than IAH. Plus, I get the extra 500 EQM/1000 RDM each leg on AUS over IAH, b/c nearly every flight I take is AUS - IAH - wherever.

I often drive 3+ hours from RSW to MIA if the price difference is more than $250-300

To SAN: 6.0 miles 12 min mostly surface streets.
To CLD: 32.2 miles 37 min mostly freeway.

A bit OT,

A couple of summers ago I was trying to fly Military Space Available (Think LCC without the amenities) from CHS AFB to Ramstein AB with my 3 daughters. We had flown from Ramstein to CHS 10 days earlier on a C-17 without a hitch.

I was on a Space A talkboard that was tracking 4 flights over the next 72 hours and thought I would be good. At 24 hours they had dropped 3 flights.

So we headed down to CHS from CAE with our fingers crossed.

When we arrived the terminal was empty, which is never a good sign. The Airman told me the flight was canceled and there would be nothing going out in the next three days.

I knew there were 3 flights scheduled to depart McGuire AFB, NJ in the next 48 hours, so we drove from SC to NJ via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, played on a beach in Delaware, spending two nights in a hotel, one in NC, one in NJ.

We arrived at McGuire and 2 of the flights were canceled, and the remaining flight, a C5A, wasn't taking PAX because they were transporting hazardous cargo. FWIW C5As have great leg room, 3-3 seating.

So I went on the board and saw that MAC had an OAI flight out of BWI that night. "OK kids, back in the car." We drove down to BWI, arrived about 1300 and played the waiting game. There were families at the USO who had been waiting for 3 days hoping to make that flight. (There is a priority system, for the purpose of this discussion I will just say Active Duty bumps families of Active Duty. Everyone bumps retired military. But the retirees know the system better than FTers know their favorite carrier)

So at 1900 they manifested the flight. Imagine hundreds of people gaggled in front of a counter hoping their name will be called (sounds like a massive IRREG Op, doesn't it). We were called and were in line waiting for BPs when I heard a huge groan from the crowd when they announced the flight was full. We had a great flight back on the OAI DC-10.

So anyway, a couple hundred dollars worth of hotel rooms and OW car rentals, a couple of days of wasted time, but a great road trip with the kids. Saved close to $2800 in airfare. :D

Yup, been there, done that.

YYZ is 15 miles from my house, but BUF is often far better for my trips, and gives an opportunity for trickery ;)

Same for me, we must be neighbours!

People around RUT, PTV and a handful of small municipal airports drive to ALB to catch WN, especially during the winter for flights to Florida.

SkyBuck Feb 23, 2010 11:24 pm

I have 10 airports within a 170-mile radius, plus two more accessible by Amtrak, and will fly from any of them if the price is right.

Do you guys count the fuel/parking cost to your cpm? Say a 100-mile drive would cost 4 gallon fuel on a 25MPG car which is around $10. So a roundtrip, together with parking would at least cost $25.

Not a cpm calculation per se, but I have a spreadsheet to convert mileage and parking time to $$ in order to evaluate whether a cheaper fare from a more distant airport makes sense.

Normally that's the case, but there was one MR deal a few years back that justified a 6-hour (plus border crossing) drive to YYZ. :D

MKE+Amtrak as an alternate for both CHI and MSP before. I have also started a trip from ALO (Waterloo, IA) to save $250+ over MSP, I was travelling with a friend from DSM so it was really splitting the difference as well. I also consider SDF/LEX/CVG as interchangable based on price and schedule.

inagaddadavida Feb 24, 2010 10:55 am

I live about 10 minutes from PHF, but will quickly drive to either ORF (25 miles) or RIC (60 miles) if the price is right.

Also once drove to IAD (~170 miles) to save $400 on a TATL.

When I lived in MLB, we once drove to MIA to fly to trinidad...more because there weren't many options than because of price though.
