Could you elaborate on such exceptions? As a consequence, might it be cheaper to nest one mileage run within another rather than do two repeat RTs (A to HNL, then on another PNR HNL-A-HNL, and finally HNL-A, as opposed to A-HNL-A and then A-HNL-A a second time)? But the exceptions are clearly exceptions, since on domestic tickets at least one can expect A-B-A to fare out the same as B-A-B?
I'm not sure what I am encountering when looking for PVD-LAX-PVD for the same fare as can find with LAX-PVD-LAX. The "flexible dates" search shows me the the latter (LAX-PVD-LAX) can indeed by had for $165, but the same approach only brings up very much higher PVD-LAX-PVD ones. I suppose there could be something buried in the terms that are so hard for me to translate, but it seems a bit improbable since generally these transcons are easier to arrange starting from the East Coast than from the West Coast, IME.
e.g.
January 1, 2007
UA001 SFO-IAD 07:00/15:00
UA002 IAD-SFO 17:00/20:00
Imagine, these are only available flights on certain fare basis code on January 1, 2007. When you search the fare ex-SFO, you will get fare pricing you are expecting, but not ex-IAD.

No - they only work on united.com, which never works for anything else, like booking a mileage run. It's a brilliant strategy by UA: the horrible website prevents us from booking most tickets, mileage runs in particular.

Think about it this way...they have just lessened the incentive for booking from 1000 RDM to 500 RDM and as a 1K (or a Silver Wings booking through SW) you don't have to pay a fee for booking through a CSR.

I completed this MR Friday.
Interestingly, the 6 legs used only 4 aircraft. The IAD-PVD RT hardware was the same plane, and the SFO-LAX 757 was the exact plane I'd flown in from IAD.
Neither of the attempted (E-500) transcon upgrades cleared. Everything was on time except the SFO-LAX leg, which meant I missed my scheduled LAX-SNA at 6ish.
That cost me almost 2 hours at the end of the journey, which was honestly pretty frustrating at the end of 20+ hours of travel.

Thanks FT for the info.

I got back from OAK-LAX-IAD-PVD-ORD-OAK last night. Cleared u/g on LAX-IAD and ORD-OAK. I didn't believe that Providence, (Co., MA ) had an airport. It was $243 b/c everything x-SFO or OAK are high.
